Almost two weeks ago I rehomed an 8 week old dachshund puppy. Today I received a call that he died suddenly this morning. They said he had been fine, healthy, eating well. He threw up last night. They changed his food yesterday. And, they noticed a worm last night (he said he thinks roundworm). Went for worming medicine & gave it to him this morning. They left for work, a relative close by went to check on him later & he was gone.

I know 100% he had Neopar at 5 weeks and 6-in-1 at 7 weeks. Regular dewormings in my care too. They didn't take him to a vet and have no idea what happened.

Any ideas on what it could have been? I still have some puppies from the same litter & they are fine (prayers welcome). I have an appt to take them to my vet in the morning.

How sad! It hurts my heart just thinking about the little thing! I hope the litter mates are getting the all clear from your vet.
Perhaps your vet can make a guess as to what might have happened. So sad!

Yes, already have a vet appointment tomorrow! I just thought maybe someone could give an opinion because I'm on pins & needles until then. Keeping a close eye on my babies!

Did they change his food gradually or all at once in one day? Could he have gotten into something that made him sick?
My 90+ pound adult dog gets sick and vomits from Heart guard and has to take an alternative.
He could have had a severe allergic reaction since he was small and had a lot of changes in one day.
Complete guess
I know for my horses, the barns where they board at, present and past, prefer to give them dewormers in the morning so they can watch them for any bad reactions all day when staff are there.
I always offer to give it at night when I'm there to save them work but they'd rather be safe and supervise the horses for hours afterwards.
I'm sorry that happened.

Prayers for your babies.

Statistically, it was probably something that you, as a breeder, had no control over whatsoever, even as far as your choice of home for the puppy.

There are worst case scenarios, but it doesn't help to let your mind go there.

I'm so sorry to hear that. That's hard.

Sometimes things just happen to puppies. Maybe it was a reaction to the worming medication?

So incredibly sorry that this happened to this poor innocent puppy. I am sending good wishes that all your other babies are just fine.

Is there any chance possible that the new owners gave the pup a flea medication of any type? This could certainly affect a very young small dog. Maybe you can ask them. So many people never correlate their flea meds with sudden ailments/death.

Prayers for you and your puppies. And comfort hugs to you guys as well from me and my doggies!
