He's number six if you count Scooter (who is passed away) so five dogs in the home right now.

Easy, Im not a materialistic person, I tend not to buy things, so all my money goes toward food, toys, vet bills etc. I have a full time job to pay for it all!

The treatment for Chili's mange, multiple skin infections, and multiple intestinal infections ran about $600. It was that, or he died in a kill shelter, in pain. Easy choice for me. :) :) :)

I am posting here the following which I received in an email this morning and that I think is appropriate : It is by Angel Wells.

A Shelter Dogs Poem

Once upon a time, you see,
There was this little pup
For reasons unbeknownst to me,
His family gave him up

Maybe it was chewing
Everything that he could find
Maybe they were busy and
Just didn't have the time

They took him to the shelter
And they just left him there
Outside, alone, in the cage
Shivering and scared

Even though they knew inside
If he went through those doors
He may never have the chance
To find a home like yours

He sat there crying silently
Wondering what he did
That was so bad that they just
Had to leave him like they did

However fate was smiling
On that little pup that day
Because a lady saw him
And she whisked him right away

He got a second chance at life
That others may have not
And now he's in a loving home
With everything he wants

Every day he gets that love
That he was looking for
And silently is thankful for when
She walked through that door

Others may not have this chance
So open up your heart
And adopt a shelter dog to take
And give a brand new start

What a little love bug! Now can you explain to me what is meant by targeting?

Thanks!
In the video you'll notice I'll say "touch" and hold out a fist and the dog will touch my hand. No matter where my hand is. Theres no food in my hand either.

Basically its the second thing I teach (after eye contact) because it makes training all the other behaviors easier. You can move the dog were you want him without having to touch him or lure him with food. The dogs pick it up FAAST and if you put the target up high they will jump to get to it, or climb furniture to figure it out.

Eventually I add other targets, for example you can transfer the touch to a post-it note on your hand and then once the dog gets that, put the post-it on other objects...ever seen dogs turn off light switches and close doors? That starts out as targeting.

Heres and OLD video with Emma...I think she does basic targeting in it as well.
YouTube - Behavior chain and the Crate game

Everytime I point and the dog goes there....thats targeting. By the way...no food used in this one. :) The next cue is the reinforcement :)

Emma is adorable! And I was quite impressed with the fact that she was given no treats...at least that I saw.

My boys are now coming in the house every single time without fail. Rascal isn't balking at all. They get treats every single time without fail. How do you train without treats?

I'm probably asking really basic stuff but I've never really had any idea about how to do it before!

Thanks!

How do you teach targeting or touch?
heres a detailed article...
Target Training: Teach your pet this useful trick!

Basically, the way I teach it is I put a treat in my hand and put it out in the air for the dog to touch...99% of the time they do because they smell the treat...

after about 3rd time you put the hand out with no treat and again, 99% of the time the dog will touch your hand anyway...

except now you feed them from your other hand...and always from the other hand from now on....

after your sure the dog is going to touch your hand....start adding a cue...like "target!" or "touch" and only reward touches you ask for.

You can now start moving the target further away...up and down...you name it...

after they are touching the target reliably you start doing variable reinforcement (rewarding randomly), so your rewarding after 2 touches, or 5 or 3...but its random...and voila, the dog is targeting.

Haha, saw the video of Emma. That was good. How do you teach a dog to play dead?
Emma offered it one day in submission and I click/treated and evertually gave it a cue (pointing and bang bang ) :)

No worries, its all basic...once you get the idea down, you'll know how to troubleshoot stuff! :)

Couple ways to get rid of treats... Emma was taught all those behaviors with treat rewards... you start doing whats called "variable reinforcement"....think of a gambling adict...they don't always get the reinforcement...which is why the game is more fun then always winning....

pretty much you start asking for the behavior multiple times for one reward... rewarding randomly actuall makes the behavior stronger. So once your sure the dog knows what your asking ask for it twice, three times, five times, but make sure you always throw a random one time in there too....

Also what was going on with Emma in that video is the next cue is a reinforcer....basically shes working for the chance to do the next behavior because its fun to do! The next command is the reward. If you notice I kick her toy at the end because I was done...basically ending the game can be a punishing experience so I used the toy to end the game.

Keep the questions coming I love it! :)

Ok, since you're so willing to help......... :)

We now have the "come" thing set. Although I don't usually even have to call them now, they just come when they see/hear the door open.

How do I get Rascal to fetch? He loves when I throw his toys and he runs like the wind to get them. But not ONE TIME has he ever even accidentally brought it back to me. :(

You basically teach the behavior backwards... you start with teaching the dog to mouth the toy...then hold the toy with your hand on it, then hold the toy without your hand on it...

at that point you add a cue like "ball" or whatever the toy is...

Once the dog is reliably doing that you can put the toy on the floor and tell the dog to get it...eventually you can start throwing the toy further and further away.

It takes a while to teach it this way, but its VERY reliable and you end up with a perfect behavior.

Second way... (way i do it ;) ) throw the toy a short distance (depends on dog, you might even just drop it) and then turn your whole body away from the dog.

Eye contact and facing the dog are body languange signals that say stop what your doing. I can't put enough emphasis on this (this also is important for the "come" cue) So if you look at your dog or face him, your telling him to drop the toy and not come to you.. If you have to face your dog, put your head down and stare at the floor calling him, it looks silly, but seriously, it works :p

9 times out of 10 the dog will leave the toy there because the owner is standing there looking at the dog...

Ussually the dog will come to you with the toy, when they do say "YES!!!" and throw a party....throw the toy too, the thrown toy is the reward.

Stop throwing the toy when they dont' bring it to you. Completely. It takes them a short time to figure out that bringing you the toy makes the game continue.

Heres a video from Kikopup on it.

and if you have time I suggest watching as many of her videos as you can...they are awesome :)

make sence? :)

I'm printing this out and we're going to give it a shot! Rascal loves to chase his toys but not a single time has he brought one back. We'll try what you said and see if I can get it right. :)

That video was amazing! Thanks for posting it!

Some dogs may need a few sessions to get it (or they might be a genius and get it right away) so don't get discouraged! Let me know how it goes or if you get stuck :)
