We move the crate every day from the kitchen to the bedroom (pup is 4months old).
It was really helpful to have the crate in the bedroom because we could hear her whimper and let her out. Even though she pretty much slept the night right off of the bat, in the month that we've had her, we've had at least 1 or 2 nights in a week where she will suddenly have to go in the middle of the night. Those cries and whines are pretty easy to tell apart from the "give me attention" cries after a few nights. The bathroom cries are pretty desperate and consistent. We also carried her from the kennel in the bedroom to outside when she had to 'go' in the middle of the night.

If you don't want to dog in the bedroom ever, then don't put the kennel in the bedroom. Can you leave it just outside of the bedroom with the door ajar so you can hear her?

And as much as your cats like dogs, I would still be very careful in introducing them. Having the new puppy in 'their' room right away may not be the best thing for the cats.
