Hi,

I have a 7.5 month old Male Golden Retriever.

He had an undescended testicle, and just last week underwent surgery. (6 days ago)

Just today I've noticed a bulge around the large incision, but it is not hot or red.. So I'm not really sure what it is. It doesnt seem to be swelling from the surgery, it's sort of firm to the touch.. Is this normal? Maybe I just havent noticed this bulge before?

My vet is about 1.5 hours drive from me, So I want to get some second opinions before I make the trip back out there!

Some swelling is normal, but 6 days after I would be more concerned of a hernia.

Is there any way you could call your vet? You may even be able to email that picture to them. It doesn't look normal to me but I've never had to deal with cryptorchid in a dog.

I did just speak with my vet. She said she can't diagnose something with a photo for liability reasons, so she didn't even want to look at the photo. She said if I'm concerned, bring him in, and they will take a look at him free of charge. It's a nice offer, but it's still a long drive if it's unnecessary.

I just googled hernias in dogs, they all seem to be round ball shaped growths.. this lump or bulge is sort of linear.. But having said that, I obviously dont know what I'm looking at!

Honestly I'd make the drive. Are they the closest vet to you?

No, there are tons closer... But I would have to pay to see any other vet. I realize that sounds a bit frugal, but... times are tight! I think the drive makes more sense then paying 80+$ to have him checked out.

I am going to wait until tomorrow to see if it gets better / worse.. and then make the trip out there. It's worth it for my little guy!

yeah that looks like it could be an infection or something forming... definitely make the drive!

ugh, I understand the vet can't diagnose but mine would at least tell me if swelling is normal, that said...I highly doubt that is normal, so a vet visit is definitely recommended.

Thank you so much for all the help people, I booked an appointment with the vet tomorrow morning. I kind of knew I'd be bringing him in, I guess I just wanted some affirmation. I really appreciate the support. Amazing forum!

So, I made the trip!

The vet took a quick look at him, and told me it's just swelling from the 3 layers of stitches. She said it happens when he is too active, so I need to keep him calm, no playing for at least another week.

It's good news! pfffhhheeww!

Good move to take him to the vet. It could be fluid accumulation post surgery, or something more serious such as a hernia or infection. Definitely something to check out hands on by the pro!

I know it's sometimes hard to keep an active dog calm but did the Vet or his support staff not relay this to you as part of the after care? If they didn't, they are very negligent IMO
Do they want to see him soon for a follow up?

I hope he continues to improve and is back to his old self in no time
