Hello!

Cooper (6 months) got neutered on Tuesday. The doctor said the procedure went well, and he stayed overnight at the vet's office. I picked him up yesterday and he was very happy to see me. He had some diarrhea when we got home, and he seemed to be struggling to get everything out. There was a bit of fresh blood in his stool, but I understand this can happen when there's an irritation in the GI tract and he was probably dealing with a lot of stress from the past 36 hours. He hasn't had bloody stool since, and he is eating and drinking with gusto. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this with their pups after a surgery.

The doctor prescribed Trazodone as a sedative since he is so high energy, in order to keep him calm and allow him to rest. Has anyone else given this to their dog? I worry about sedatives because I have a (probably irrational) fear that he will stop breathing in his sleep. I left him home today in his crate about two hours after I gave him the sedative. He's wearing an inflatable e-collar (looks like an inner tube), and I'm hoping he doesn't struggle out of it somehow. I may be worrying for nothing, but I tend to lean on the side of Murphy's Law.

Thanks!

My dog took trazodne for anxiety for almost a year. It made him sleepy, but didn't put him out or anything. We didn't have any negative side effects - I just didn't like the sleepiness it caused him so we quit. But good for a sedative :)

He sounds like he's on the road to recovery. Neuters, IME, heal pretty quick.
