Poo- How to let my dog know he can now poo on a different spot?

732 Views 2 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  Daisy Dog
My dog (Sandy) is old and "on the way out" and finding it difficult to use the stairs to go down onto the garden to have a poo and pee; he can go down but finds it difficult to return. if I am not around (he cries for help if he can't return upstairs...) I am afraid he may stay down there all day! I would like him to poo/pee instead on the porch which is at the same level as to back door; but he is not very keen (I had put down newspapers and a small 'sample' of his poo on it).
Is there a way to let him know (or to teach him) that is alright to poo and pee in this new spot?
Kind regards,
Sandy Friend

It may help to place some newspapers where he normally likes to go potty in the garden. He can get used to going on them there, and it will make the transition to using them on the porch easier. Putting his poo on the newspapers is a great first step! Definitely continue to do that as well.
Rewarding for potty...

Sandy Friend,

I'm not sure as to how much time you have in a day for a couple of days/week max...but here is something that you may want to try and it will take a little bit of time.

If you are keeping Sandy downstairs, what you may want to do is once every thirty minutes check to see if Sandy needs to potty. Take her to the desired spot you would like for her to potty and make sure you have some kind of treat that she enjoys. On the way to the spot you want her to potty at praise her and give her a treat (i like the milkbone mini's cuz they are only 5 cals ea). If you do this continually she will get in the habit that it is a good thing to poop or pee in that spot and all you have to do is just gradually take out the treats and pet her and praise her for her bathroom efforts.

I hope this helps...
