Hey everyone!

So I've noticed a little habit of Tux's and I don't know if I should be concerned. I think he is testing me (little bugger) but I wanted to get all of your wonderful opinions.

Tux has a habit of growling when we get into playing. When it happens I get the toy or whatever we are playing with away from him and ignore him for a few minutes and then start playing again. After the initial growl we have no trouble after (usually). It seems to be getting more common though, and I don't want people to be afraid to play with him, because he loves people and other dogs. Literally, when we are on walks if he sees someone or somedoggy he stops, sits, and waits with his tail wagging in hopes they say hello.

Any advice? Or is this just part of the puppy phase? (He is 4 months) :ponder:

Play-growl is perfectly fine and normal and doggie! It's how they tell each other they're just playing, the growl is a very different sound from their I-mean-it growl!

I wouldn't try to correct it. It's perfectly natural and he's just telling you he's playing. If anyone else worries over the same, tell them that, and point out all his other body language that says he's having fun, the wiggly body, the happy tail, the bounciness.

Edit: If he DOESN'T have playful body language when he's growling and it's NOT a play growl then he may be resource guarding, and then it'll have to be addressed that way. But if it's play let him play.

If you're sure it's only when he's playing then there's nothing to worry about and I wouldn't bother correcting it personally. Cosmo is immensely growly, and will run at dogs with a play growl which scares their owners on occasion but dogs are good at reading each other so I don't really care what the owner has to say about it, as long as he's playing nicely and not bullying and the other dog isn't scared I leave it alone. If the owner makes a fuss we usually just explain its play and if they still throw a fit we just leave.

He loves growling when we play tug and he gets quite loud sometimes - sounds like a bear!

Sancho does that too.
Mostly when we play more physical...like tugging with a ropetoy or scuffling.
it sounds very different than his "serious growl".
I think it is cute, when he so much into playing that he start doing that.

Play growling is completely normal. :)
Come over here and you'll think they're killing each other, lol. Karitsa is VERY vocal during play and Tynan and Timber are too but not as intense as Karitsa
