Peeing on soft things

My 1 year old Brittany, Tona, can't have anything soft in his crate (bed, towel, or toys) or he will pee on it. It's without fail, every time. It doesn't matter if he's in there for 5 minutes or 5 hours, he will pee on anything that's soft. Any other time (except for the one time I totally forgot to take him out before bed WHOOPS) he doesn't pee.

Is there a reason for this and/or a way to fix it? He's a cuddly pup when he sleeps so I thought it would be nice for him to be able to have something soft rather than the plastic crate bottom.

Sounds like he is staking claim to anything you put in his crate with him aka marking his territory, as long as he isn't uncomfortable I would just keep that sort of stuff out of there.
