During the day we keep our dog in a closed kitchen and at night, we close our bedroom door and keep him with us for the night in the master suite (we have a baby gate we close). When locked up in the kitchen or the master suite, he does not pee in the kitchen or in the master suite, waiting to go when we take him out. If for some reason we fail to lock him in the master suite at night or leave the gate not closed all the way, he will go down stairs and pee in the family or dining room. We don't know what to do, he doesn't pee in the house when we are awake only at night when we are sleeping and only if he isn't locked in. Any suggestions?

You dog learned to not go where he sleeps which is a good thing. That is why he won't go in the bedroom or kitchen. Every where else is fair game when not being watched. He is not house broken and should not be allowed out of your sight in the rest of the house. Make sure you reward him every time he goes out side so he knows there you want him to go. Just because he goes out side does not mean he knows that is where you would prefer him to go. I like clicker training for this to mark the out side as the place to go.
