Hello! I sent home a rambunctious little puppy to his new home yesterday. The puppy was playful, active, friendly, and just a typical puppy. I sold the dog to a man named “Bob” when he was about 2 weeks old. Yesterday, when he was 9 weeks old “Bob” and his wife (whom I have never spoken to before) show up and collect the sweet puppy I called Moe.
Prior to Bob purchase I verified their vet, references and all seemed great. As soon as Bob and his wife got here we spoke about the dog, played with him, went over his routine and so forth. The very first thing Bobs wife asked me was “if this puppy dies from parvo tomorrow do we get a refund?” I found the question rather odd as it was so instant but explained how he dosnt need to be adventuring anywhere prior to finishing his shots, gave them his vet paperwork, and explained my policy on puppies (necropsy policy and so forth). She still was very stuck on how they got their money back, but Bob was kind, and I assumed maybe her issue was a language barrier. This was around 4pm.

So- this afternoon around 2pm Bobs wife texted me and says the dog has distemper and they are at the vet. I of course call her and she didn’t answer but continues to text. She says she’s at the vet and they are positive that is what it is. I of course immediately call their vet. Bob used his vet as a reference and gave his vets office permission to speak with me. He owned a lab fhaf this vet treated for 6 years. Anyhow. Call the vet. The vet states they haven’t seen Bob today. I immediately am confused. So I text and say the vet said you are not there. No response. She then asked me how they go about getting their money back. I explain the policy again and ask what vet they are at. She won’t say, she just continues to say it’s so sick. I ask what is it doing, how is it acting, again, no response.

It has now been hours since I have heard anything from either Bob or his wife.

I kept one of the puppies for myself in this litter and she is acting fine. I also placed a puppy with a friend of mine, again, fine. There are two more puppies with other buyers. I did ask how they are today and have gotten good reports from both.

My question, do I tell the other littermates owners about what Bob and his wife are saying (but won’t confirm, won’t tell what vet, and are just asking for their money back?) I want everyone to be safe, but I also don’t want to cause wise spread panic when my gut is telling me something isn’t right here. While I’ve never dealt with distemper I would imagine it has more then a 10 hour from totally fine to “on deaths doorstep” period. Not to mention, it is my understanding that it is highly contagious ?

Sounds to me like they are scammers and just want their money back. Ugh. Could you offer them a refund if they return the puppy? I wouldn't want those people raising one of my pups.
I did! No response. Suddenly they are not responding to my texts when I said I don’t see how he 1) declined that quickly and 2) how none of his littermates are showing symptoms and 3) don’t understand why they can’t disclose said vets name and why they didn’t go to their regular vet of many years who is open for business today.

They have now responded, but not with location/vet/anything besides the dog is having seizures and I don’t want to talk.

They just want a free dog. Really, I'd just tell them that without any proof, all you can do is take the dog back and return their money. And even if they sent proof, I'd definitely double check everything... NO WAY that pup got sick within 10 hours when the others are fine...

Unless you actually see the puppy, they could have taken another sick puppy to the Vet and are saying it was the one they got from you. Sounds like a Scam.

I would offer them the money back just to get the dog a better home.

I agree it seems like a definite scam, but I would still inform the ones that have the litter mates, but let them know you think it's a scam, better to be safe than sorry.

I did. He/she (I’m unsure whose responding) hasn’t responded to me since I called the vet they provided as a reference and he said he hadn’t seen them in over a month. I told the client that and no response since.

This is awful. So awful, I called my vet, he said it would seem very unlikely that one of them caught distemper and the others havnt. All dogs here are UTD on vaccinations and like I said littermate I kept is fine. I now have her seculded in my (heated of course basement) I have mom on the main floor, and my only litter of 2019 secluded on my third floor... I am nervous, but none of it makes any sense to me. Why wouldn’t they provide vet info? Or a picture? Video? Something. This puppy yesterday was a very rambunctious, happy almost 4 pound angel... so I don’t get how this all happened soooo fast...they left me with the dog at 5 pm and claim to have went to whatever mystery vet at 11. They’re also now saying the vet sent them home with the dog? None of it makes any sense. I wish they’d just bring the dog back. I’d love to buy him back ?

I wouldn’t think so! They left me with dog between 5-6pm yesterday and texted me at 3-4 today saying it was “on deaths door” by 10:30 this morning. None of it makes sense. I’ve always thought if one in the litter had distemper seeing as how contagious it is that the others would show symptoms too.. but his littermate is literally on my floor chasing the treat launcher ?

I'd text them this, "If you want a refund then I'll meet you, at the vet you have taken the puppy to and exchange your refund for the puppy. I'll even pay the vet bill. BUT in order to get the refund I need the puppy back."

Doing it that way you get the puppy back and have proof that it either has distemper or it does not. Either way you get the puppy back.

I'm guessing that these people want a free puppy and they are most likely going to then sell the puppy to someone else probably for more then they paid for it. I'm thinking that the puppy might no longer be with them but is in another home.

This is why I do applications and deposits. I also have the puppies get their first initial vaccine from a licensed vet.
If I had someone email me telling me one of 'my' pups had distemper, I would send one email to them asking for 'proof' as in lab work from a licensed vet, and what form of treatment, all itemized vet bills, with in 24 hours of this email. And if I heard nothing... I would not do anything else. I would print and save the email or whatever communication between both parties, necessary.
I know that calling the vet myself would not work because most vets will not give into to just anyone.

Sorry this happen to you. I would learn from it, and change your 'contract' on future pups.

Again, sounds like a scammer. I would hold off telling the other puppy owners until you have some sort of proof and I would only offer them their money if they can produce a necropsy as your contract outlines or return the puppy to you (of course keep it separate from your puppy until your vet clears it).

So sorry this happened to you.

Just now seeing this thread. How horrible! These people sound terrible!! What is their deal?

What ever ended up happening to the puppy? The other dogs were fine, right? I hope so! Did you get the pup back?

I wouldn't have believed their BS unless they showed me absolute proof from a legit vet. If they were legit, they would have been more than happy to provide you with proof right?

So sorry this happened to you. Some people are so crappy!!!!
