Her name is Little Miss Daisy May - she's a 9 year old Yorkshire terrier and just recently she was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor on her right anal glad, or apocrine gland adenocarcinoma.
She belongs to my grandmother who right now is in a rehabilitation center after a series of strokes and thus cannot have the dog with her (she still gets to see her on her days out, but it's hard for Daisy May).
So, we as a family have been sharing Daisy, but have decided it'd be better for her to start to stay in one home as she's very skittish and takes a while to warm up to people.
Anyways, we started noticing odd behavior from her - acting like she has to go out, and then running back and forth from the door to the yard, trying to go, yet nothing happens. Sometimes she didn't go for over 2 days. She started making whimpering sounds and was very lethargic.
We took her to the vet, explained her symptoms, and the vet recommended some test. Those tests included an ultrasound, blood tests, and even an x-ray. These things were not cheap.
Didn't take long for the results: she had a cancerous tumor on her right anal glad and even though it was small, it was spreading.
Surgery would be expensive (at this point we had already payed close to $1,000) and our family just doesn't have an extra $2,000 laying around.
And even though Daisy May is old (9 years) and the surgery would most likely not cure her, it would extend her life and certainly better her quality of life.
I'm wondering if anyone else has gone through this and if they got the surgery or not. Either way, we're going to try.
I'm reaching out to the dog lovers community. I understand it may seem tacky for me to ask for donations, but I HAVE to try. I lived with my grandma for 7 years, all of which were Daisy was there, and although I have no children, I feel like she's just important to me as a child would be to their parents.
I've managed to pool around 1/2 of the money for the surgery and the post-surgery care and medications. We're still short, and the link to donate will be provided at the end of this post.
Even if you cannot donate (trust me, I know how though times can be), maybe you could share/spread this plea to get it more attention.
I am not above asking for charity when it comes to Miss Daisy May - she deserves to live the rest of her years out in comfort and with those that love her.
Or, if you have any experiences with this maybe you can offer some advice?
Thank you for taking to time to read this either way. Give prayers for little Daisy May.
