Hello, I hope everyone is doing well. I have a 12 year old German Shepard and Boxer mix, she is the sweetest thing on planet earth. She has had a long and healthy life with very little health issues. But in the past several months she has had just a terrible time, starting with vestibular disease in early March and just in the past 2 months she was diagnosed with stage 2 renal disease and is now suffering from cognitive dysfunction as well as what appears to be degenerative myelopathy. I know that sounds terrible but she remains in very good spirits and most of the time is the same happy pup we've always known. She is taking several supplements for her joints, brain and kidney functions. The vet has also prescribed Hills K/D dog food, which helps with the renal disease. She has also been prescribed pain and two anxiety medications. Which brings me to what I have come to this forum for. She is suffering from severe anxiety, this has been the most difficult part. We can't seem to figure out why she won't lay down at night. Due to the joint pain and degenerative myelopathy after a while she can barely stand up. It honestly is heart breaking to watch, she will pace around the house all night long and whine for no apparent reason. You would think she would just lay down and rest considering she can hardly stand but that doesn't seem to be the case. She is keeping the family up at night, sometimes she will spend 5 or 6 hours at night just wandering. This is so sad because you can see that she is struggling to support herself. When she does get rest she is otherwise her normal self, so I know if I could just get her to lay down and rest at night she would be fine. I just don't know how to do that.

Wandering around at night, unable to settle, is a symptom of CCD (Canine Cognitive Dysfunction). Maybe have another word with your vet.
