Josh is a 9 yo terrier mix, rescued recently after an extended period in a foster home situation.

He isn't interested in playing at all. Not with balls, not with toys. He's not listless, just doesn't seem to be interested in anything other than food - which he gets plenty. He'll play with a ball if it has food in it. He'll play with a treat dispenser. But not plushed toy or rubber items. On walks, he's usually sniffing for food.

Could someone suggest simple exercises/games that can slowly get him started?

Treat dispensing toys are your best bet. You can even cut open a tennis ball and put treats in it. Eventually it builds positive associations with the toys themselves.

There's a good article about building value in toys floating around somewhere.. I'll try to find it.
