Hello! I have a friend who moved in Germany and has a golden retriever female from me, now she is 2 years and 3 months old.
I am very worried because nobody could figure out what her illness is and it is getting worse…we need to find out what’s wrong so we can treat her. She lost 4 kg in 2 weeks and a half. I will write down here my friend’s story regarding every detail about what happened to her… maybe there is a vet around here or a breeder ..or anyone that might have an idea about these synthoms..
I will be very grateful if anyone can help with anything!
I know it's a lot of reading and for those who wants a short story, the synthoms are (the first 3 are the main):
- problems when walking, seems her back /front or muscles are hurting, sometimes can't get up
- fever, up to 39.9
- excessive drooling, salivating
- lost food appetite, vomiting (vets say maybe because of pills)
My friend's story:
“Two weeks ago on Saturday morning we were at our usual walk (that takes normally 1 hour, 1 hour and a half), she met up with some dog friends and played fetch with the others for about 15-20 minutes then we walked back home (until then she didn't showed any signs of pain), however we stoped shortly for a break in a nearby park and after 15 minutes when we should have cpntinued our walk she didn't seemed to be able to walk on the front side, it looked like she had shoulder pain, as soon as I got home with her (I should mention that the park is about 300m far from home and it took us almost an hour to get home) I went with her directly to the veteranian, they said that she might have taken a wrong step in some whole and that's where the shoulder pain comes from. They checked if any bone would be broken, nothing seemed out of the ordinary, so they gave her some anti inflammatory. She walked verry slowly on that day (due pain) and short distances. Sunday she seemed to be having problems to get up (figured that's because her front hurts) however Monday she couldn't get up without help from the back anymore. This time her back part seemed to be hurting. We went again to the veterenian and they told us that she might have put her weight in the back part to protect the front and that's why her back is hurting. Again pain killers and anti inflamatories. After two days she started to salivate extremly, and she seemed to have a fever (she was still walking very slowly and our daily walks were reduced to 300-400 m a day). We went again to the veteranians and after mesuring her fever they told us that she's having 39 + degrees. This time she got injections for fever and anti-inflamatories and they gave us antibiotics Baytril because she seemed to have swollen lymph. She seemed to be doing better for the next two days but afterwards her condition droped back to the exact same. Fever, muscle pain and extreme salivating - they gave us the same tretement and took blood to see if it isn't borreliosis. Soon we had the blood results and they told us that it isn't borreliosis, however the blood test prooved that theres a sever inflamation in her body. So they started guessing that maybe she's having something in her throat and that's the reason of the extreme saliva, on Thursday (last week) we went back for an endoscopy, but before that they decided to make a X-ray about her thoat to see where's the damage. The Xray was perfectly normal and didnt showed any signs of objects in her throat. Then we were sent right on that day to Duisburg a dog clinic, because they were expertized in internal research and they should take over our case. They made a new X-ray picture this time about her belly, everything seemed to be okay except the kidneys seemed to be biger than normal. Afterwards they made Ultrasound for her internal organs, nothing out of the ordinary there either. Then followed the endoscopy and after two hours they told us that not even the endoscopy found anything that should be related to her condition. They took then a blood sample and sent to the laboratory to see if she's not auto immune or has any other sicknes that could have been from the bit of a tick. (Today we got the results, everything was negative, no tick sickness or autoimune). At the clinic they gave us medicine that she should be taking the next 10 days. The medicines are the following: Ranitiding, Ronaxan and Prednisolon. Friday afternoon she started to feel better and her appetite was back, she started eating normal portions (140g Orijen dog food mixed with ground beef). This Saturday she was fine even walked beter and was in a playful mood, she had good apetite, this Sunday morning she was alright but in the afternoon her condition droped back to fever, mucle pain (she couldn't move her back legs normally and I carried her) and again the extreme salivating. We went to the veteranians again and she got something to help the fever drop and painkillers, after 2-3 hours the medicine seemed to be working and she started feeling better. She ate and took her medicine, and went to sleep. Today 4 in the morning when I woke up she already puked twice and after that until 9 she puked 4 more times. Still she kept her appetite and wanted to eat her breackfast. Outside she walked almost normaly, and was still in a playfull mood when she met a friends dog. Later in the afternoon she puked again, still she kept her normal demenor and was barking when a friend came by, wigling her tail and asking to be pet. I called my vet and they told us the blood results (she's not having tick sicknesses or auto imunne/lupus), they told us that they can't help us any further because they never met such a case and now they sent us for tomorrow to Gießen an Uniklinik that's specialized in rare diseases. Tonight they should give her a perfusion to keep her hydrated. This is everything that happened until now.”
