I'm getting a new puppy in about two weeks (3 months old) and am only gone for 5hrs. max on one day and only 2-3hrs. every other day, but I worry about the new puppy having accidents so I was going to kennel train her.
The problem is, my older 4yr. old Papillon has never been kennel trained and therefore won't be in a kennel. Would it be unfair to the new puppy to kennel her up while my dog and kitten run free? As I said, it won't be for long, and only as long as it takes her to learn potty training, but I don't want it to have a negative affect on her.

I can see it having a negative effect on her. I have kenneled one or two of my three for years with no adverse affects. You have to remember that dogs don't see things the way we do, they don't think in terms of fair or unfair.

Before the cookie incident Ratchet was unkenneled during the day and Tesla was kenneled and there were no problems. More recently, I got Prowl and he gets kenneled when the other two are loose and I get no issues. Occasionally I'll hear a small whine if the other two are piled on the bed with me on the weekends, but otherwise he's good.

In my opinion the secret to successfully managing multiple pets is realizing that it is NOT about fairness or equality. It is about recognizing individual needs and meeting them.

Each of my dogs gets activities planned aimed at their liking.. ie Ginger likes to run and Susu likes little wandering walks so I walk them separate a lot. Susu likes going on errands. Ginger likes the park.

Their amounts of freedom and access to rooms, etc is based on each dogs behavior. Ginger has a great recall so she is off lead more often than Susu. Susu is slow to come back because he has to pee on every blade of grass.

Just continually evaluate each animals needs and make decisions based on them as individuals and you and they will be much happier. :) and your little one will probably feel more secure in a crate than with animals that he doesnt know as well and you want to be able to supervise their interactions to make sure they are positive for everyone so that they get off to a great start together.

Mine are only inside at nite, Jo is on tie down during the day BC she will wonder, Izze is not. Izze has a lot of freedom, Jo does not due to the fact that I cannot trust HER to do the right thing, she just wants ro goof off & be a little idiot :S. I dont consider her my dog anymore, as she connects better with OH then me (hurts tho it does :'( ) I was hoping that we'd have a relationship like me & Izze have, but sadly its not the case.
