Hi guys! So after months of waiting I finally got my dog!

He seems a bit big for a mini, he is around a foot tall (at the head), and to me he sort of looks like an adult mini? He is 4 months old by the way. Is it just that all the mini schnauzers I've seen are just smaller ones? Idk I'm confused although I don't mind having a schnauzer just wondering wether if he is a mini or not.

Also right now he is just laying down staring into space? Is that normal? From a distance he looks like he is sleeping but with his eyes open? Is he just depressed? I'm a new dog owner and advice would be appreciated :)

Edit: never mind he just does that when I pass but he is actually sleeping *facepalm*

The standard for mini schnauzers has a lot of variation. They range from 12-14in in height and 12-20lbs in weight. I would say he is about on track :) will probably be at the larger end of the breed standard.

The standard 12 to 14 inch is the measurement from the shoulder down, not the top of the head.

My daughter bought a miniature Schnauzer from a breeder. He turned out to be quite larger than the 'standard' for a miniature. They love him to pieces though. He's white and his name is Dash. :)

I agree - he's very sweet!!! I don't know anything about the breed but I think all dogs go through an adjustment period. I think he's just checking things out and will begin to show his true personality bit by bit over time.

Congrats on your new schnauzer pup! I've had 4 mini schnauzers in my life (2 currently, 2 while I was growing up). Fantastic little dogs. Very smart and affectionate and fun. However, most are very headstrong, so you must start training them right away. They are very food motivated so food and praise should be all you need to get them to work with you. Use their dog food to train at every meal time. Practice inside the house and out on walks, at the park, etc. Also, schnauzers NEED lots of socialization. Introduce them to lots of people, animals, and places and REWARD good behavior.

Best wishes!
