Hello all!
My name is Amanda and I am a 22 year old post-graduate. I rescued a Husky/malamute/shepherd a year and a half ago that was about to be euthanized due to behavioral issues.. mostly separation anxiety. She has gotten extremely better but I still have to crate her when I'm gone. She's my world!!

Beginning of July, a litter of puppies were abandoned in a horse shed in not good condition. My family took two of them, and I took one (so we have 3 total but I live in a different state). Upon doing a DNA test, we found they are half GSD, half Malinois... (cue the replies saying how in over my head I am having a mali).
With my new little man being part Mali, I decided to join this forum for advice and support. Before anyone comments, I know how much physical and mental exercise they need, how they have to have a job, they are one of the smartest and highest prey drive dogs out there, and only very experienced owners should have one. I did not know what I got myself into getting him as I did not know what breed he was, but we are adapting very well (I have had him for a month now) and I am working very hard with him. We train every day, so far he knows Sit, stay, come, and watch me. We are starting heel as well, but that is taking a bit longer. I am determined to raise this pup right, but I will need some advice and support along the way.

I know they are very sensitive dogs, I use only positive training but I am strict and take a leadership roll with him. I am excited to get to know all of you!! Any other Mali puppy owners out there??? Tell me I'm not alone!!!!

Awesome dogs!!! I saw your other post on another thread and know that sometimes its overwhelming but you're madly in love and it shows. I think you'll get there. I think you should find other Malinois families in your area and get some advice from them. As you know, many working K-9s are Malinois and they love to have lots to do and need tons of socializing, both with people and other animals. Find a obedience class nearby and get him a spot as soon as you can. Please update us. Your dogs are beauties!!

Wow... this meant SO much to me. Thank you!!! He already LOVES all other people and dogs - so socializing is going well!
I love them so much and they are my everything but I get very overwhelmed. I'm trying to find other Malinois owners in my area but I don't know how to go about that... I don't think there are many where I live. Does anyone have advice on how to find other Mali owners in my area, or how to find a malinois experienced obedience trainer?!

I'm not sure where you're from. Larger cities have more resources. If you want to let me know what city you're in, I can help you search.

Hi Amanda, I have a Malinois, she is almost 2.5 years old.

What is your goal with this dog? Pet? Or do you want to do sports with him? We are training our Mal in Mondioring. I know there is a Mondioring club in Oklahoma City, we've trained with them before, most of the dogs in that club are Mals.

Socialize socialize socialize, we took our girl to as many places as we could to socialize her. We enrolled in group classes (a puppy class and a beginner's obedience) when she was a puppy just for socialization. The instructors weren't experienced with Mals, but we knew what we were doing and got what we needed out of those classes.

She is our first Malinois, but we were in a protection sports club for 5 years (with a GSD) and did foster work for 4 years before we got her, so we had dog training experience. My Mal is pretty handler sensitive, she does well with motivational training (I use corrections occasionally, but that's after she turned 1.5 years old).

Have fun with her and best of luck!

Oh my goodness this is so funny haha. I did about 3 hours of researching Mals last night and I actually came across your video and watched it several times (before you posted on here!). I am very impressed with your work you did on your sweet baby and would love to stay in contact with you for advice.

Socializing is going as well as it can for now... he has not had all his shots (2.5 more weeks until last round!) so I am hesitant to take him to too many places as of now. He can be a HUGE rough player with other dogs but he is always nice and playful, never fearful. He also LOVES people. He will run and leap into anyone's arms and smother them in face kisses. He has been exposed to almost everything. He has swam, we live in a big city with lots of noise such as a train right by my house and he has grown accustomed to all types of people, sounds, etc. So those are good signs. I am trying to teach him to be a but more gentle with other dogs though. I am getting him into a puppy class in the next month!

I want him as a pet, but I definitely want to get into some sport with him. I was thinking agility but have not looked into Mondioring.. i will begin researching that now!! Do you know of the place you used in Oklahoma City?
I want to do protection dog training with him SO bad but I sadly cannot afford that kind of training right now. Most are running at about $10,000 to start with.

Oh funny... that's where I am from. My parents still live there with their Mali puppies. I am there about once a month :) I appreciate you helping me so much!
These are the three biggest I can find, but also on facebook, for instance in my area there is an Rockwall Texas: My Town group, so check to see if there is a group in your neighborhood, where you can speak to one another and ask if anyone else has a Malinois who would want to socialize with you and your dog.

LOL, that's so funny :p

Look up Red Dirt Ringer, they are in Oklahoma City, that's the group we trained with.

Your little one sounds just like my Mal! She used to want to greet every single person/dog we saw during walks. She is still very people and dog-friendly, but now understands that we don't need to say "hi" to everyone

For socialization, as a puppy, we only allowed her to interact with dog-neutral dogs on purpose. We didn't want her to think of other dogs as playmates. It depends on what your goal is, we wanted her to become more or less dog-neutral as an adult.

We dabbled in agility for a little bit, mainly for her exposure. Mondioring takes a lot of commitment, but if you can find the time to do it, it is a lot of fun. My club member wasn't kidding when he said Mondioring is not a dog sport, it is a lifestyle, LOL.

Mondioring is a protection sport, but that's different from personal protection training. Find a good club and they can guide you in the right direction base on your puppy's temperament and drives.

Are you using an e collar on her? It looked like in some videos you were so I was just wondering.
Yes, we have 2 GSDs and her, all of them are e-collar trained. But most of our training is motivational, all of her foundation is done via clicker/marker/shaping and luring.

Look up Michael Ellis, our training is very Michael Ellis-based.

Hey, we are in Dallas! We are not that far from each other :D
This is so funny/ironic that we are all from Dallas, haha!!! What are the odds. Do you have a trainer in Dallas you like? My parents have 2 baby Malis... mine's siblings. They would LOVE to get into contact with experienced Mal/GSD trainers
