My one year old golden retriever has an unusual nail on his one foot. His nail is actually growing through his paw pad, which has cause it to split, and the nail is growing almost upside down and twisted.

Our vet clinic has never seen anything like this which is why I am looking to see if anyone else has.

He seems to tolerate it but if the nail is too long or his foot gets hit he will limp a bit so it clearly bugs him. The same toe on his other foot has no nail at all which may or may not be related and this has been like this since we first got him as a puppy.

Any thoughts on what it may be would b

You can find more info on this if you google congenital nail dystrophy in dogs. Also Anonychia = absence of claws & Onychoschizia= deformity of claws. Suggested treatments- surgical removal of the nail.
