Hey fellow Dog lovers, we have a mystery of the worst kind on our paws and wondering if anyone out there has light they can shine on this situation. I apologize in advance as this will be a long post.

Last July we took a trip and boarded our two dogs at a very reputable kennel, the one we’ve always used. We returned after 10 days and picked up the very excited puppies and headed home. The first day home- everything normal, the second day our big dog (Carolina Dog) stopped eating and began throwing up. We made her some chicken and rice, our beagle mix was fine with no issues.
The next day she refused food and when I returned from work, found blood in her vomit and noticed she was also pooping blood. Terrified, I rushed her into the Vet and had them complete X-rays and all of the recommended blood tests. Perfect results. Such a relief immediately, but still troubling as we were unable to pinpoint the root cause. She was prescribed antacid, stomach coat and wormer (just in case) which promptly did the trick. No further issues.

Fast forward to last week. We took a shorter 5 day trip and per usual, boarded the dogs. This time we picked them up, both happy, healthy no issues. First day home- again, everything normal. Second day, the beagle mix stopped eating and began throwing up. Again I made him chicken and rice last night and` didn’t have any issues except that he wouldn’t eat the rice this morning. I stopped by the house on my lunch today, a little worried and walked into a horrific scene of bloody vomit everywhere. Oh yes. The same story, exact same timeline but with the other dog this time, Carolina Dog completely fine. Needless to say, again, terrified for my little beag I called off work and rushed him in to the Vet for another pocket draining battery of tests to yield another perfect bill of health. The Vet prescribed the same medications as they were successful for my other dog in July. We just started meds so fingers crossed everything goes as well as last time.

SO, what is going on here?!? The Vet and Techs are out of ideas and so are we. The symptoms are so scary weird, I could chalk it up to stress if the same dog had the reaction twice but the personalities are so different in each dog. Carolina Dog is cool as a cucumber, nothing stresses her out. Beagle mix is the baby and stresses. They had their own food in the kennel, stayed in the same run together and I of course called the kennel to ask if they noticed anything odd and to find out what cleaning chemicals they use. They use a cleaner for the runs but the owner says it’s “gentle” and she’s never had other clients or any of her personal dogs display anything like this. We don’t use chemicals in our home, mostly essential oils and vinegar. They’re also not chewers and x-ray’s showed no foreign bodies.

It’s just so weird and upsetting, we’ll be trying a different kennel on our next trip, not because we believe they did anything wrong, really just as a precaution to remove one of the variables of this awful re-occurrence.

Please comment with your thoughts, and again I apologize for the long post.

It sounds like they ate SOMETHING toxic to me! Especially since once they pooped and threw everything up they were fine! I might suspect the food too.........maybe the they got food that was moldy or just didn't agree with their digestive systems.......

I could agree with both of those possibilities.
We bought them a brand new bag of their normal food just the smaller packaging to last though the week. It looks like they used it and the few leftover kibbles look fresh and normal, but maybe they did get a little bit of something else, especially if they weren't eating well. I just can't imagine what they got into separately on two different occasions that caused such a severe reaction.

I would wonder about parasites of some sort, I've heard of that happening with worms. I can't imagine how scary that would be to come home to. :(
