Hi.

I have an 11 year old westie called Jake.

After a recent squirrel chasing episode he started to limp on his back legs. I took him to the vet who prescribed him some rest and a couple of weeks of medication called metacam. The treatment did work, however I want to know what I can use instead of metacam as something he can take all the time to keep his joints supple and ease any stiffness he may encounter should this happen again.

Thanks

From someone with joint problems: Make sure he's got lots of soft places to sleep. Buy a cooling bed for the summer so that he doesn't sleep on the hard tile. Give him the same amount of time walking, but break it up into shorter walks. Keep him warm. If he's been sleeping for a while, get him up and moving around a little, then let him go back to sleep. (Other than at night, you don't need to wake up during the night.)
