Hi! I just stumbled across this forum with hopes of getting a few tips.

A while ago, I got this beautiful Labrador named Sol. Fast forward to a few months later, she is now bigger, however, she tends to snap at my dog sometimes. For example, today she was licking me and as soon as my other dog named Luna approached me, sol snapped at her and it started a barking war. Truth is I have no idea how to stop this behavior and any help would be appreciated!

Your dog is resource guarding. The resource that he is guarding is you!
Does he show resource guarding in other things?
Does he allow you to take his chew stick away, or will he hold on tighter or even growl?
Does he display resource guarding behaviour with the other dog when it is meal time, or when playing with toys?

I found this article online that talks about owner guarding:
https://pawsibilitiesny.com/dogs-resource-guard-part-3-owner-guarding/
I like that it says to get the help from a behaviorist!!!

This is from this dog forum I found in the stickies: https://www.dogforum.com/training-behavior-stickies/resource-guarding-causes-prevention-modification-7511/

hi! thank you so much for the suggested article. I've read over it and it has some very interesting points. Regarding your questions, Sol only guards her bone but only if Luna gets close to her. Other than that, she has no issue letting me come near her whenever she has something she really wants. As for mealtime, they both mind their business and only focus on their food but they do let people near them. While playing with toys, the same can sort of be said- Both of them play with eachother, however, they both just leave eachother alone when either isn't interested in playing.

Redirect bad behaviors into great behviors and then reward the good stuff!

I have three dogs that have very different personalities that get along nicely most times, but every so often... so I understand your situation!

What I would suggest for you is to immediately redirect all negative behavior asap or even before it occurs!

So if one dog is licking you, and the other comes near, ask BOTH dogs to sit or speak or high five or whatever tricks/commands they can do easily. Reward them both when they comply!
Make the requested redirected behavior fun and highly rewarding.

Practice tricks together for praise and treats. This is really helpful for bonding and teaching fairness and patience and teaching them that your attention is for both of them if they work together!

I do this all the time with my dogs. It works very well. Sooooo much better than always telling your dogs NO or Break it UP!

Teaching my dogs what I love and what behaviors they will be constantly rewarded for is my methodology for having a peaceful relationship with all my three dogs and two kitties..and two humans:)
