My New Dog and Sister for Skipper

Hi All,

I was feeling badly for Skipper being the lone dog in the house while I'm at work all day, so I decided to look around for a sibling for her.

I saw this little irresistible face (see pictures below) on the Facebook page of the rescue group from whom I adopted Skipper. Isn't she just so cute? She's only 13 pounds, and she looks just like a miniature Blue Picardy Spaniel.

She came from a hoarding situation, and she's very timid and unsure. I really didn't want a nervous dog, but the thing that struck me about her is that she seems scared, but not nervous. I know that doesn't make sense. She doesn't really shake or shiver or try to appease me. She is very calm, and she has always let me approach her without making any real effort to run away. At first, she would put her head down and lower her eyes, but now she actually comes up to me sometimes for pets.

I just had to share. I think she's the cutest thing ever! If any of you have guesses as to what her breed mix is, I'd love to hear.

Thanks all!

I'm going to name her Layla. I've been super happy with her so far. She's been very sweet and cooperative. She hasn't even had a single accident in the house, despite the fact that she's never been house-trained as far as we know. She follows me around, especially when we're outside. I've taken her on several hikes and let her off leash, and she always keeps within a few feet of me. It's so refreshing compared to Skipper, who has boundless energy and enthusiasm and runs around at full speed whenever I let her off-leash on hikes. :D

I would have never guessed BC, but that's interesting. I did think that she could be part Beagle, as several of the dogs that she was living with, and is possibly related to, are Beagle mixes. The thing that stumps me, though, is that she is so small. I mean, she fits in an xs collar. What Beagle, BC, or spaniel is 13 pounds and fits in xs collars?
@amaryllis, you get it! I feel the same way about never wanting to own a nervous dog. I had looked at another dog with my dad, and that dog was also timid. She was friendlier than Layla and very sweet, but I felt like she was a nervous, slightly paranoid dog. My dad thought she was great, and when I wasn't sold on her, my dad thought I was only looking for a fun-loving, confident dog. When I took Layla to meet my parents, my dad was surprised. He was like, "I thought you didn't want a dog like this!" haha. He doesn't understand my "scared but not nervous" analysis. I'm glad you do. :) You probably said it better, though: "shut down, unsocialized." That's a perfect way of describing Layla.

This is a pic of some of the dogs leaving the hoarding situation and being transported to the rescue. You can see Layla in the top left corner. As you can see, many of the dogs look like Beagle/Heeler mixes. None of them have the longer, silky, Spaniel hair that Layla does.

Layla certainly does have a resemblance to those dogs, but aren't the setters 40-50 pounds? Layla is only 14 pounds... I'm beginning to think that she could be a papillon/cavalier mix with a little bit of beagle.
