Thanks all!
I'm going to name her Layla. I've been super happy with her so far. She's been very sweet and cooperative. She hasn't even had a single accident in the house, despite the fact that she's never been house-trained as far as we know. She follows me around, especially when we're outside. I've taken her on several hikes and let her off leash, and she always keeps within a few feet of me. It's so refreshing compared to Skipper, who has boundless energy and enthusiasm and runs around at full speed whenever I let her off-leash on hikes.
I would have never guessed BC, but that's interesting. I did think that she could be part Beagle, as several of the dogs that she was living with, and is possibly related to, are Beagle mixes. The thing that stumps me, though, is that she is so small. I mean, she fits in an xs collar. What Beagle, BC, or spaniel is 13 pounds and fits in xs collars?
@amaryllis, you get it! I feel the same way about never wanting to own a nervous dog. I had looked at another dog with my dad, and that dog was also timid. She was friendlier than Layla and very sweet, but I felt like she was a nervous, slightly paranoid dog. My dad thought she was great, and when I wasn't sold on her, my dad thought I was only looking for a fun-loving, confident dog. When I took Layla to meet my parents, my dad was surprised. He was like, "I thought you didn't want a dog like this!" haha. He doesn't understand my "scared but not nervous" analysis. I'm glad you do.
You probably said it better, though: "shut down, unsocialized." That's a perfect way of describing Layla.
