well basically crate = scaryscary im gonna die. You need to change the association to Crate= awesome. This can take a while, so don't give up and get frustrated.

Start feeding is meals as close to the crate as he'll get. If hes kosher with that already you can skip to the second step. Sit on the floor and toss his whole meal, one kibble at a time on the floor near the crate...then try tossing a few inside the crate (just barely) play this game for several days until its second nature for him to go inside (no matter no slightly)

Once hes comfortable begain feeding him in the crate. Door open. Do that for a few days. When you feel hes ready start closing the door more and more while he eats in the crate.

Once hes eating whole meals in the crate with the door closed you can start working on the amount of time...and when you get to that point let me know and i'll walk you through it. :)

Key is never force him into it and with som' dogs it takes a while for them to change their minds.

My dog has pretty bad separation anxiety too. How do you help them cope?

you have to very slowly help them understand its ok to be alone.

You might start with closing a door for a half second and then popping back in before they can react and giving them a treat.. repeat 100 times (lol not at once) eventually building up to leaving the room for hours at a time.

Or if say the jingle of your keys signals your leaving, just randomly go get your keys and jingle them but don't leave. So the keys loose meaning. :)

Good, at least you know its the crate and not you leaving specifically. Sorry he's still a'pooin'....i hate bringing out the carpet cleaner.

Thank you. Now what do I do when I have her in the car and go into a store really quick? She barks like crazy so I don't take her with me much.
If she barks when the car stops, sit there and wait it out (don't look at her or move)...she'll have to take a breath and stop for a moment, when she does say "yes" and funnel treats. Once shes good at that you would do the same thing as you'd do with the door in the house. Get out of the car and then immediately back in.. and treat/praise( before the dog can react)...

do this a few times... get out, walk a few steps then get in again, treat/praise...etc etc...

anytime the dog doesn't react, reward them.

You'll look like an idiot training this btw...my neighbors stare at me when I did this with Tippy.

Same thing, go slow, if the dog fails, back up a step, or break it down into smaller steps. :)

that sucks...im in that position alot honestly...luckily we have a no kill (really a "low" kill) shelter near here I take them too...

I find that most dogs under 30lbs are in HIGH demand...it might not be a bad idea to take him to the humane society...just let them know you'll adopt him if no one else does... :)

Thank you! That means a lot to me, It really does.

Whats nice about a forum is people can see advice and take it or leave it... or take out of it what works for them.

.... and no one feels forced to take advice (like if you hire a trainer for 6 weeks ) and no one feels rejected when advice isn't taken (in real life I find that people are less open to suggestions sadly)

I'm glad stuff is working out for you...I learn from your guys too!
