My 17 month old dachshund/chihuahua mix female keeps licking my 6 month old female maltipoo's ears and eyes. I usually wouldn't mind this but I read from some individuals' personal experiences that this action may cause ear infections and I would assume it's bad for my maltipoo's vision too if she continues to be licked in the eyes. Shes been doing this ever since they been together and today she got hurt and has a cut under her right eye. Should I stop my dachshunds licking behavior or is it normal? Hope you dog veterans can enlighten me, thanks for any input!!!

I'd take the excess licking as a sign there is something wrong with the dog who is being licked. Other dogs are attracted to mild infections of ears and eyes. I'd get the "victim" checked out by the vet.

I had the same problems with a mom and daughter minature schnauzer. The adult daughter constantly licked the om's ears. Mom eventually developed a horrible yeast infection in her ears. The pup then tried to continue to lick due to the infection. My vet said sometimes it becomes a vicious circle.
I would have the younger dog's ears checked. Licking of a dog mate is a comfort thing. It may take some work, as it did for us, but you need to really deter the older pup from licking.

I was thinking that too! I don't a dog licking another dog can give it an infection. Mother dogs are always licking their puppies all over their bodies.

Well i understand that dogs like to lick salty stuff like human hands, (dog) tears, etc so i was wondering could she be attracted to her tears (causing her to lick her eyes)

I have noticed a dog will lick another dog's ears if it is dirty or infected, with say yeast or bacteria. They can pick up on the smell, and for them it seems like a problem so they lick it.

That's my take on it, anyway. Could be wrong of course.

When my dad got a real bad cut he would pour salt on it them let our GS lick the cut. I heard of someone else that does this .
