Hi, I've just written an essay about my dog but realised it was so long that nobody would have the time to read it! So I'll try to summarise now as I'm really worried and hope there's somebody that can help.

She's about 3 years old poodle mix (spaniel or terrier, hard to tell), usually very energetic and very playful.

She's currently eating and drinking/pooing and weeing all fine (as far as I can tell) BUT last 2-3 days she's very lethargic, no energy, doesn't want to walk or play. She struggles to get up. She sometimes just sits a bit hunched up in her bed, staring into space. If you approach her she looks very wary and scared. Her eyes follow you around but she doesn't move her head. If I go to stroke her head she cowers a bit but isn't aggressive. She licks her lips a lot and is panting a lot. I put her on my bed because she sleeps there sometimes and when I wasn't looking she jumped off and then yelped in pain. She is OK being picked up and carried around.

I've taken her to the vets twice in the last few days and they've done blood tests, normal temperature reading, they poked and prodded her and all seemed fine. They seem a bit stumped like me. They did give me some antibiotics and something in case her tummy was unsettled (I think).

She did have a very bad bout of diarrhea and sickness about 3 weeks ago but it seemed to clear up although she was occasionally sick and not as keen on her food as before. I've found ticks on her before and one large one on the floor in the apartment earlier this week but she doesn't have a fever and the blood tests are negative.

If anyone has any ideas what could be wrong with her please let me know.

Best wishes

You need to seek a second opinion for your dog; i disagree with throwing antibiotics at a problem that we have yet to diagnose. Was your dog checked for neck pain? Does she resent flexion of her neck from side to side? Was your dog checked for tick born diseases (typically a 4DX ELISA is done - but PCR is also an option)? I would consider taking her to an emergency/referral service and seeing an internal medicine specialist.

Thanks for the reply. My thoughts exactly really. I sought a second opinion on the day after the first visit because I wasn't entirely satisfied, it just so happened to be at the same clinic (where I picked her up from through the rescue centre). However, on the second visit the vet was one that I've dealt with since I've had the dog so I was more confident they'd done what they could at that stage even though he didn't do anything other than give the painkiller. I went there the second time with the intention of getting a PCR and he said that they could do it but it would probably be a waste of time (and money) since her blood tests were negative. I am still considering taking her to another specialist clinic but she's showing signs of recovery this morning, on her feet and wanting to play a bit so I'm hopeful. Regards

Hi!
I dog sit a Vizsla mix and her first vet dxc'd her with giardia, lots of watery diarrhea, losing weight....I asked the owner to take her to a different vet after she had had two whole rounds of antibiotics; I told the owner I thought she had ear infections +? Well the second vet found that she had another and different bacteria infection in the colon as well as a virus of some kind (forget what he said).

Something is medically wrong, you know your dog....try another vet or a specialist. Hope she gets well soon and is diagnosed! Hang in there!

Thanks to those who replied. I'm pleased to say it seems that my dog has made almost a complete recovery now. I took her urine sample down to the vets yesterday as she was still a bit subdued in the morning and I was keen to find out what was wrong even though it was clearing up. They called to say they could find nothing. So I'm none the wiser what was wrong with her but she was definitely sick with something. Just relieved it's almost over and I can take her on a proper walk again later. :D All the best. (I've had her almost a year)
