Hi Dog Forum,
This is my first post but I am looking for some advice in training my puppy Bailey. Bailey is a 1 year old rescue, Australian Cattle Dog/Lab mix. My wife and I adopted her in July 2016. She has been a fantastic dog and loves being with the family. Her training over the last year has been exceptional but about 3 months ago she suddenly became very territorial with people she doesnt know. She brings out the fierce bark when strangers come to the house and keeps her distance. I am wondering if you have any pointers.

Bailey has been going to a day care since she was about 5 months old so we have been socializing her from the start. On the weekends we visit the dog park but lately her barking and anxiety is peaking there as well.

Any tips are greatly appreciated.

Cattle dogs are not known for their innate 'friendliness' generally. Yes, they can be well socialised & easygoing, but it's also important to consider it's not as natural to them, so tends to take careful work.

But if you have put in the effort & your dog has been great until recently & suddenly changed, I suspect 'something' has happened that you don't know about. Could be her age - she's becoming more mature, but I'd be looking at specific triggers & working on those. Eg. set up friends to come around & help you train. Perhaps it's other dogs approaching her at the dog park, so you could avoid off lead for now & get her comfortable with dogs at varying (controlled) distances first for eg.
