Hello everybody! I am new to this page... I recently adopted a 7 year old Coon hound and he is the love of my life. When I first got him I wasn't working so I spent a lot of time with him one on one. He did have some small accidents in the house at first but was finally house broken!!!
Well I started going to work again and I used to leave him in the room with plenty of water and toys... but he would just trash the room and use it as a toilet. So I got a crate for him, went okay for a few days but now he's going inside of it constantly and using the room and his create as a potty again. whenever I leave he freaks out, even when someone else is home and he's not caged.
When he was a puppy he was only used for hunting and kept outside. Then he was abandoned, starved and dying when they found him. He was fostered and even adopted by someone else but they gave him back to the shelter and he stayed there for over a year until I found him.
He's not interested in playing with any toys or swimming or any activities besides following me around the house, napping and our long walks about 3-4 miles a day.I take him to the dog park and he isn't interested in other dogs and just lays in the grass.
full disclosure, the cage is not too big, its just big enough for him to turn around and stand up and lay down. I have had other dogs before but I have always adopted younger dogs. So i know this isn't going to solve itself over night. But it's been three months now since I went back to work and he's still having accidents daily.
I was hoping there was anyone that can help me with any of this. I want him to enjoy his life and play and the end goal is to get rid of the crate and just let him be in the house (with out trashing it or accidents)
