Hello Everyone,

Sorry for the incredibly long post. My dog is 12 year old Chihuahua mix. He is about 8 pounds, a little overweight. Yesterday I noticed he was not putting weight on his right hind leg. Today when I took him to the vet, they took X-rays and decided his ACL was torn. She said the side effects are not very severe yet because we caught it early (not sure how significant this is). The vet suggested various surgeries. I asked about other methods such as letting it heal on its own (from what I read online) or conservative methods, however, she completely opposed this and said it would only get worse and surgery is needed. She told me about various surgeries. She personally recommended extracapsular repair which a vet at that clinic specializes in. I was quoted around $1700 for this. However, she also told me about TPLO which I understand is a more invasive method. She said I would need to go to a specialist for this and quoted me around $3000. Although, the costs of this does seem hefty, if it is truly a better option for my dog, I am willing to pay it. However, it seems to be a more invasive process which scares me a lot. Would extracapsular repair be sufficient for my dog? He is not very active. I walk him to the park every morning and sometimes a second time around my neighbourhood. He also runs up the stairs sometimes but I can restrict from him doing this. I don't know what to do and I'm very scared. I need help from owners who have gone through these processes before and vets PLEASE.

I've heard that ACL surgery is very effective. Unfortunately once one side is torn there is a high risk that the other side will also tear.

Here is a video of the surgery from the tv series Dr. Jeff
