A little background:

She's a six year old beagle with diagnosed rag weed allergies that result in her itching all over where she becomes red and sometimes scratches herself because I find scab's on her later.

The allergie started five years ago and as she gets older it develops and changes,
last year it was her scratching constantly ( her allergies usually start in august and end around christmas time) someone said to try and cut out chicken (another common allergen) since she's always been grain and wheat free that seemed to work she stopped scrathing.

This year look's like its a runny nose and sneezing for my poor baby.

The vet gave me Apoquel for the rag weed but I heard horror stories about that medication...
And she's also on 10mg claritin for the non allergenic months (vet said it was ok)

So my question is is should I leave her on Apoquel or do you guys have a sugestion of a safer med?
Would Apoquel take care of the runny nose?

Thank You

Apoquel will not help with sneezing, it strictly controls pruritus (itching). Your antihistamine may be helpful for the respiratory signs, so continuing the Claritin is indicated. If pruritus returns discuss your concerns regarding Apoquel with your vet. Used properly, in healthy individuals, and with the proper monitoring, it is a much safer alternative than for example, long-term steroids. Also ask your vet about Cytopoint injections, which are in the same drug-family as Apoquel, but supposedly much less risk of immune suppression...
