My 2 year old mastador male keeps on sneaking into my trash can whether it be when im in the other room or im not at home. I love him to death but its really frustrating when I come home to trash all over my kitchen. What can I do to stop this bad habit?

Well the simple answer would be to move the trash can to the garage, if you have one!

My sister had a lab that would do this, so she used to put a very heavy iron weight on the trash can lid and that solved the problem.

My Basset will still do this and he's 12 now. He's not as bad as he use to be thankfully. I just put the trash cans up where he can't get them. A closet works.

Either put the dog somewhere he can't get to the trash or put the trash somewhere the dog can't get to it. Management is easier than training.

My dog does the same thing and the only effective method we have found is to put the trash where she can't reach it.

He need more practice, be patient to train him. or just get the trash out.

Kuma my rescue would always get into the trash and he's even worse with hubby.(he'll so it right next to him when I ask him to do the dishes.) Kuma knows with me its not allowed.

The only thing I can say is how we fixed the problem was to put our trash out of his reach so he cannot be tempted.

But the way our apartment is layed out, we have a perfect view of our trash in the kitchen so we watch the trash when we are in the room and when he gets close to it we give him a firm kuma, ah ah, or leave it. (We trained the leave it command )

I bought automatic trash cans to circumvent this, Trucker watched the cat and learned to open the automatic trash cans. Now if I turn them off he just flips them over to get inside them. I have to use the super small trashcan under the sink (in the cabinet) and take it out to the outside street trash can daily.

Dog proof trashcan is the only way to go. For the kitchen one under the sink is good with a childproof lock on the door. Or one of those step to open ones--mine is metal and it's great. The bathroom--just keep the door closed.

I have a garbage hound, too...*le sigh*

The first thing I did was to put the trash in the garage. The second thing was to ban the dogs from the kitchen. They're cute, they'll sit in the doorway to the kitchen but won't come in.
