Hi Everyone,
Im a my whits end my little man Harvey (3.5 year old Border Collie) has had anal fistulas for the past 6 months, he was on prednasone and a gel for 4 months with no real signs of clearing, I read about Protopic (Tacrolimus) and have been using that for a week but over the course of a week his fur has been falling out below his bum and on his upper legs, the vet seems clueless as he didnt know about Tacrolimus till i told him. He has suggested Cyclosporine but I hear bad things about it.
I did say could it be the result of coming off the Prednisone, he didnt know, I dont know what to do, I cant handle losing him as we lost his great uncle 4 years ago at aged 8.
Please if anyone has experience let me know, im in the UK.

Thank you very much for any advice.

If your Vet is clueless, he should be referring you to another Vet specialist. Prednisone is an extremely powerful drug, believe me, I know as our dog has been on high doses of it for a couple of months because of an auto-immune disorder. Taking them off prednisone has to be done slowly, in small increments over a fairly long period of time, which is were we are now. If your Vet is suggesting Cyclosporine, he or she must be suspicious of an auto-immune problem of some sort. There are a number of drugs out there that will suppress the immune system, question your Vet, or find one that knows more about it.

If my vet ever sounded that unsure, I'd be looking for a new vet. Fortunately my Dr. Bailey is a bit old fashioned, more or less a country vet but, he knows his stuff and, tells it how it is, even if you might not want to hear it - I like that in a vet.

Unless you're a vet or, at least a technician, ALWAYS consult a vet about medications, even topical and "natural" or herbal remedies.
