Diva's kennel cough has mostly subsided (its been a week since i brought her home and about 5 days on the meds her vet gave her) but she sneezes like CRAZY. Im not *too* concerned. I do have some concerns that Id love to get some input on:

1) Shes stopped peeing/pooping. She was only going once a day as it was, on her last walk of the day. Now its been well over 24 hours and she hasnt done either one. Shes not going in the house either. I dont see or smell anything and I really check. Shes eating and drinking. I walk her around 4 or 5 times a day for about 30-45 minutes. I dont know what to do. Im trying to get another vet visit because she needs the heart worm test anyway, but Im concerned....this leads to my next question...

2) Crate training. I dont want to do it. She hasnt had an accident in the house since the 1st night. She is blocked off from the living room/bedroom/bathroom when Im not here. This is where the most dangerous stuff is. Ive doggie proofed the area shes in AND she has two doggie beds. One in the "social" room, where the boyfriend and I chill (this is the one she prefers) and one in a small room off the kitchen. the bed is situated between a desk and the wall and when I leave she goes straight to that one. But everything I read/hear tells me I need to crate train...do I HAVE to? Am I doing damage by not crate training?

3) I think this is normal/expected: I live in a 4 family house. She really only sees me and my bf in the house, the hall, the front yard. She doesnt really "get" that there are other people living here so when she sees people in the hall (which is very small and narrow) or the front yard (where we spend a lot of time) she growls and even barks at them. When she met my neighbor the other day in the front yard she growled and barked. I took her off the step and asked my neighbor to come down very slowly and stand still and then say hi. Then in my sweet doggie voice I introduced them and Diva calmed down. When she was totally calm I had her move closer to my neighbor and my neighbor fed Diva a treat. All was well. But I dont know. Was that right? Will I have to do that every time? (FYI...Im not trying to do EVERYTHING by myself, Im going to the vet asap and Im going to a meet the trainer at petco on sunday). Any and all advice would be appreciated.
THANKS!!!

that is awesome!

she needs to see a vet asap... if you are sure she isn't eliminating there is a problem, and potentially a serious one... how is her overall behavior other wise? does she still seem tired? or is she more energetic?

what you are doing is the same basic idea as crate training... it isn't necessary to actually crate your dog and lots and lots of people never do. BUT you never know when you may need to crate her in the future and the more comfortable she is with it now, the easier that will be. not too long ago there was a fairly serious fire in my town and a lot of people were forced to crate/kennel their dogs for the first time ever. the dogs that had never been crated had a really hard time, and crate training will make lots of things easier for you in the future (like taking her with you when you travel, or visit friends or family)just something to think about...

what you did was just fine ;) teaching her that these people=good stuff is definitely a step in the right direction... in fact, i would keep treats on hand at all times so that you don't miss an opportunity to create a positive association for her... this video explains more:

i hope this helps you out... and don't worry, keep us posted and we'll try to keep helping you out...

oh and definitely keep us posted on the elimination issues... sending some {{{good vibes}}} to your diva...

The vet said that is IMPOSSIBLE that shes been holding it for that long and that she must be peeing in the house. I tried to tell him that she doesnt have free reign when Im not there and that it really doesnt seem like shes peeing in the house. He was pretty much a jerk about it and didnt believe me. Im more freaked AFTER going to the vet than I was before the vet! He said her bladder seemed normal (she just happened to pee a waterfall right before we got to the vet's door) and that she seems generally healthy.

She snapped at him when he tried to examiner her (which she DIDNT do with the other vet) and he said she may just have some nervous stuff going on. I dunno.

Honestly, if your vet is a jerk, I would find a different one!

If you are uncomfortable with him, then your dog most certainly will be!

I would continue to watch her closely and keep a record of when she relieves herself. If she doesn't sart to go potty, then I would get a second opinion.

ditto everything in Fawkese's post. She beat me to it! The crate is a good thing to teach just in case, you never know when you'll need it, but its not "required".

and yeah, don't hesitate to switch vets, I had to switch like 5+ times before I found a decent one.

There are two vets at this animal hospital. The first one was really nice and Diva really took to her, allowed all handling, etc. The one today was a d-bag. I think Ill just always request the other one.

Im watching her like a hawk, but I heard that they can sort of feel that anxiety off their gaurdians and that can make it worse.

Other than yesterday, shes been peeing at 1130 pm, every nite. Ill continue to monitor and hopefully it will work itself out.

Im thinking Im not going to crate train. We are starting behavior training asap so that relieves some of my basic behavior anxieties. Thanks for all the advice and well wishes!!
