Missing kneecap/patelle right hind leg

Hello,

my name is Zdenek Balcar, from Czech republic, Europe.

I have a portuguese water dog, 8 weeks old female. I have her 1 week now. Since I have her, she limps on right hind leg. I thought it is just temporary injury caused by playing with her siblings. Unfortunately after x-rays was discovered, there is a kneecap/patelle missing.

Is there any chance a kneecap is going to appear?

Do you recommend any exercise for now? Or just to stay calm? With my family we already love her no matter what and want to give her a chance for the best life possible. It seems to be very rare, so I will appreciate any help.

Thank you

Kind Regards
Zdenek Balcar

Have a look at this link - this surgery specialises in groundbreaking procedures including the invention of new prosthetics.

I hate to say it but if it were me I would be banging on the breeders door right now.

You are in for a whole lot of expense and heartbreak, waiting outside a vet to hear how surgery has gone is every owners nightmare . Even if you dont return the dog you should make sure the breeder is aware there is a problem and to be honest I would expect a refund after all you have been sold a defective dog..

As regards treatment you are going to need a good vet and a big bag of cash

I'd ask the vet to do more views of her back legs. Maybe it's because she's so young that it can't be seen on that particular view....or it truly isn't there at all (So get an xray with the puppy lying on her back with her legs straight, possibly from the opposite side of each leg if that can be done as well.)

Until you get to the bottom of things, probably best for her to be kept calm (hard to do with a little puppy i know) and given supervised potty time outside.

Maybe she will need surgery for a prosthetic kneecap, maybe not. But I'd want my vet to keep doing xrays to see the progress of the bone growth and keep an eye out for any arthritic changes in her bones as she grows and goes through life.

Good luck!

I see my mistake. Your first 2 xrays because of the tail position it looks like left on the first photo and right on the second photo. (Please someone back me up so i dont look as big of an idiot as i feel.) -- Yeah, kinda look like you are saying. I got you.

You cant see the patella on my dogs knee so hopefully its just as you say and the xray hasnt picked it up yet. -- this also depends on the machine. Our private vet had just some basic x-ray and did not see anything on the screens so he forwarded us to the specialist. The orthopedic specialist had much better x-ray machine and straight away discovered missing kneecap.

As you can see here on the left leg, there is patella already creating. There is none on the right leg. I hope it is just delayed.

Anyway the spaces are ok was said to us. A flab is creating around the joints, I think it is going to connect during the growth.
