I couldn't find this topic although it was mentioned in one thread I found - it was short though.

I am wondering what beds are decent as I've found two 'different types.'

Some are over $200 but I have trouble distinguishing them from the cheap ones.

Some vendors clam the memory foam is 3" thick but most sites and even customers claim it is 2" and the regular foam is 2" (total foam thickness of 4").

Does that sound right?

Do you think that a $30 - $80 one on amazon will be any good? There's a lot to choose from and many get good reviews but I don't know if the buyers really know if it's any good....or not. A dog will lie down on anything you have available, usually.

The dog is about 10 lbs (Jack Russell & Chihuahua cross...I think) so it doesn't need to be very big. I bought an orthopedic bed for a previous dog (Pom family) but I don't think it had memory foam. It was from PetSmart. The alleged 'memory foam' beds there didnt' look too great (one has a 'mound') and they were expensive. I am wondering if I can get something relatively the same or better for much cheaper on Amazon. I looked into pet supplies places including those that specialize in dog/pet beds but many were listing beds for $200 - $300.

And no, I don't really want to make one. :) I believe you can buy memory foam at places like Walmart but I don't think I want to get into that. I would be wondering if what I made was sufficient. The dog doesn't have joint problems and I want to keep it that way. She can still jump on the bed, on the couch and chair (when I'm sitting there). I allow her, too. Maybe it was a bad habit to allow but if I have comfortable beds on the floor, maybe she'll go on it most of the time. She currently uses the dog bed I already have quite often and she likes anywhere that has a big comforter blanket as she likes to hide underneath them.

Therefore, I know she'll try anything I get her - just need the comforter on top. :)

Can anyone recommend something? - Amazon.ca or some vendor that ships (relatively cheaply without duties) to Canada would be best.

I got a 3" shredded memory foam one with removable/washable cover from amazon. I went with the shredded memory foam because I thought it would be more like a nest and my dog is young and doesn't have any joint problems or any medical need for a thicker/firmer bed. She sleeps on it at night, no problem, although during the day she prefers to lie straight on the carpet even though the bed is out in the open and available. She's allowed on the sofa so I suspect that makes her bed a bit less desirable. :p

Our dog has decided our multi-thousand dollar king size split adjustable bed is just fine for her.

I highly recommend bargain/closeout stores for cheap dog beds- Big Lots, Ollies, TJ Maxx, Burlington all have a pet section, and while their inventory is patchy, usually have some sort of decent beds for good prices. Always much cheaper than pet stores- I theorize that that's because they really don't know (or care) what they have :) - have also found excellent prices on "name brand" toys at both Burlington and TJ Maxx. I know the Ollies near me currently has memory foam dog beds (2" thick for small dogs, 3" thick for large dogs- same as the ones Petsmart had for 2-3x higher price) for less than $20. I've also made them using either "eggcrate" foam, or memory foam from a local liquidation store (small cuts are cheap, cheap, cheap) putting the piece(s) into a pillowcase, and closing just the one end left (or just leaving it open). But if you shop around, you can find "made" beds for the price of the stuff to make one, and save the time and effort.
