Last August, we went to some friends' place and they had a fixed male and an intact female dog (who wasn't in heat). Shortly after we returned home, we found some dried urine in a few places in the house.

Was this just a coincidence for the timing, or is Panda (our almost 5 year old male) smelling her where we might have rubbed her scent on our possessions?

He wears a belly band now almost full time except at night & when he's outside. We've only ever caught him in the act once and he'll head downstairs - without us - and when he returns, his band is soiled.

I can't see us having carried the female's scent everywhere he's peeing.

He asks for the door when he needs to go and he can hold it for a long time as he's in his cage during the day when we're gone without his belly band.

Could this be a UTI? Is there something I can give him - cranberry juice? to get him back to normal? He was fully house trained, NEVER messed in the house before this happened, and now it seems to be a regular occurrence (NOTE: he only pees in the house, never #2)

I'd call the vet but they always seem to make it seem like an emergency when I ask.

If he has a uti he needs veterinary treatment, in humans cranberries can help reduce the chance of getting a uti but do nothing once it is present. Not sure about dogs. A UTI can become an emergency which is why your vet treats it like one.

Fwiw, we have a male and female dog, both fixed, and when we have over my husband's parent's male dog, also fixed, my male dog suddenly starts marking in the house. So it sounds behavioral to me. As far as the continued marking though, I'm not really sure why it would go on so long, which makes me think maybe it is a UTI. Only a vet can rule that out, so I'd say if you don't like the vet you've got, might be time to try a new one. Wish I could be more helpful, but this sounds like it might be beyond the powers of this internet commenter.

Sounds behavioral to me as well... If it was UTI, probably be no rhyme or reason to the peeing.

But, I have given cranberry juice to dogs on the past to help along minor UTI. Organic cranberries boiled down, not that carp on the store shelves.

I don't know if I just missed it but is your he fixed? Uneutured males are more likely to spray/mark. Make sure your cleaning the spots with the right cleaner to get rid of the enzymes, if you don't it will still smell like a good spot for him to mark. How often do you let him outside? How old is he?

He's almost 5, fixed - the belly band: (like a cumberbun with a pad or diaper inside to prevent a mess). He's good some days but seems to do it when were not around (he likes to go to the lower level when we're upstairs and pee)

Hubby caught him once and yelled at him - scared the hell out of Panda and I don't recall if he's done it since - he still wears the band, goes outside every few hours - seems to try to mark (goes in the pad instead) when he thinks he's alone.
