My dog is a 3 year old Maltese named Bentley. I've had him since 8 weeks. I love him to death, but I don't know what to do at the moment.:ponder: I've tried to train him but he has horrible anxiety and bad habits, so I don't know what would break his habits now that he's not a puppy. Here's his issues:
Vet trips and hair appts. His barks are more like screeches and loses control of his bladder/bowel functions and can't control pooping everywhere out of nervousness.
In the car, it's the same way, so I avoid taking him anywhere. Barking and jumping is uncontrollable when he sees a person or anything, even tries chasing after cars on walks.
The worst problem is that if anything works him up, even the weather or us packing for vacation, then he'll just, pee. Anywhere, even on beds which he does often. He might throw up even.
Also to mention, he stills digs in the garbage all the time.
All these being said, he is house-trained, knows not to garbage dig, etc so he always knows when he's done wrong, but does it anyway. Anxiety and barking is uncontrollable.
Please, any advice??? What is the best way for me to train him now at 3 yrs old? I can't even seem to fully house train him. I will take any advice and answer any questions you may have. This anxiety isn't healthy for him.:( (only good habit he has is to sleep while I'm away and he is cage trained, at home, he hates it in the car.)

First step: vet work up by a vet willing to visit you. Your dog seems to be suffering extreme anxiety of the type that needs to be addressed by a vet.

Second step: management. Don't allow him into spaces where peeing is a problem. Piece of lino and an ex pen work wonders. You can also get a belly band for times when you want him out of that area.

Third step: get a compassionate trainer in.

Good luck!

Thank you for the advice. I'll talk about this with his vet. Out of curiosity, how might the vet address this problem?
Bentley doesn't have one area he pees, but he pees anywhere he feels like it/uncontrollable when nervous. I will look into a belly band for sure though.
Unfortunately I live in a far out area w/o many trainers to choose from. I will do a deeper search though. I think a trainer would do a lot of good for him.

They might suggest training like this - Relaxation protocol. Or perhaps medication.

I can see how hard it would be to potty train a severely anxious dog. I had to put up and ex-pen with a lino base to limit my dog's access while potty training. She was only allowed access to other areas while supervised and right after going out to potty.

Relaxation protocol looks very interesting. Thanks again! I'll talk to his vet about it.
