Hi,
Just over a week ago ago we adopted our 4th dog, a lurcher called Casper, and he is wonderful.
Yesterday morning I was walking him and one of my other dogs, Lola (german shepherd x boxer), I was throwing a ball for them as I usually do, but then I threw the ball through a bunch of trees and the 2 dogs ran together through 2 trees but as they were running through, Lola pushed off Casper and he ran into a tree. As soon as he hit it he dropped to the ground and began howling in pain, he couldn't move. Thankfully a very kind man came along and helped me carry him to the car. I brought him straight to the vets and they did an x-ray which showed his leg is completely smashed with multiple breaks. They don't know whether they can do the surgery needed or if he needs an orthopaedic specialist. Anyway, we have to wait until Monday for their orthopaedic vet to look at him but for the weekend, he's in the vets on painkillers so hopefully he's comfortable.
None of my dogs have ever broken a leg before so my question is, are there any lurcher owners out there who have had a similar experience? Because of his breed he loves to run at top speed and I'm just wondering if any other lurchers out there have had a bad break but made a full recovery and could still run around after surgery?
Obviously if his quality of life won't be great after surgery, euthanasia is an option but that is our absolute last option as he is only around 3 years old and we've only had him a week. If he won't have a great leg after surgery I am going to ask the vet to consider amputation instead of euthanasia.
I would love if any lurcher owners with a similar experience could tell me how their dogs got on after sugery.

Thanks! :D

Sorry this happened to your poor new guy!

I haven't been through this myself, but I follow a lurcher rescue on facebook and they often have dogs come in with awful injuries and broken legs, and through their updates I've seen almost all of them come through to be healthy and happy again! Even if they have had an amputation that definitely doesn't mean they have a poor quality of life.

Here's one of their "tripawds" getting around great soon after surgery. Good luck :)
