JMO - Being boarded can be stressful and stress can cause tummy upset which could result in diarrhea. He may have also been given something new at the kennel like a treat he isn't used to or maybe different kibble than he normally gets, etc...
I would also suggest giving it a few days to see if he firms up like normal, and if he doesn't then definitely call up your vet and schedule that appointment.
