@Curls is our poodle guru and might be able to help.

Have you tried going to shows and getting into conversation with people?

Poodles are awesome dogs, seriously underrated in my opinion.

Oh ok thanks
It's definitely worth going to shows. People there will know the breed, know who is planning litters, know who to go to and who to avoid. It will also help you raise your own profile as someone who is interested in the breed.
To help broaden the net, and keep an eye on shows, you should take a look into the breed club. There should be a chapter in your area, and they usually keep a breeder directory. You'll still have to vet them, but it gives you a good start.

Sadly, Google only gets you so far when looking for a good breeder. Web site skills do not necessarily overlap with breeding skills. Actually, in many cases a really slick web site with a lot of five star reviews can be a red flag. Statistically, only a small percentage of buyers ever leave a review. I've seen the number as 1-10%. Most standard poodle breeders only have one or two litters a year, so they'll sell maybe 15 puppies in a year. So, it would be reasonable for them to get maybe 1-2 reviews a year. If you are seeing 5-10 reviews a year, there is a good chance you are dealing with a high volume breeder or a puppy broker.

Since you are in New England, the Poodle Club of Massachusetts would be a good place to start looking.

Thank you. I am also looking for one can be possibly a service dog. I think I may have found one. She wasn't advertising I found her from another breeder I cam across that had no litters but this breeder is expecting pups end of this week. Champion sired. I had to fill out a six page adoption application and I have to wait and see if it's approved. So we will see. If not I'll keep on looking but what you said makes sense thank you

Actually that's a bit of a red flag - most decent breeders will have a waiting list for their pups long before the litter is due.

maybe so but hers are champion litters and it comes with a 2 yr health genetic guarentee and other guarentees. but i dont even know if im approved yet.
A genetic guarantee against what though? Some of the important (and expensive) medical conditions aren't tested with DNA, they are tested with things like x-rays under general anaesthetic.

It's a six page paper. I'm sorry, I don't have it in front of me. But I know it covered things like eyes, hips. Etc

Hip scoring, which is an important test, is done by x-ray, not DNA.

This is like 5he poodle forum all you want is to bring me down and nothingis good enough
I'm not going to engage in these fights.
Nobody is fighting. All we are doing is trying to offer sensible advice. An awful lot of dogs are bred with health conditions that you could avoid by selecting your breeder carefully - conditions that down the line could cause pain for the dog, and expense and heartache for you.

It’s not that nothing’s good enough - it’s the opposite, in fact. We want you to have the best dog you can possibly get, with the best back-up by the best breeder you can possibly get.

But fine, if you think we’re fighting, don’t take our word for it.

Here’s what the RSPCA say about getting a puppy;

RSPCA - Buying a Puppy

…And America’s Humane Society;
Humane Society - Buying a Puppy

…And the AKC;
AKC Puppy Buying

These breeders see you coming.

Yes, they talk the talk, they smile to your face, they print off meaningless documents that sound good, make it sound like they know what they’re talking about. But their documents aren’t worth the ink and the paper they’re printed on.

Look at it this way - would you buy a brand new car or washing machine or any other goods item without a year’s warranty and a “Money back guarantee”?

By choosing these breeders, that’s what your doing. You’re paying good money for a dog which might look great, but under the body, could be a total wreck.

We’re not the bad guys here. We’re just trying to help.
