My 8 month old Welsh terrier Cross loves chewing hide bones but, once they get too small or all that is left is one knot he stops and I have several discarded knots around the place which seems a waste. Is it possible to do something with them? Make a new chew toy?

I assume you are talking about rawhide bones? Yes, when they get down to that last piece throw it out. It's nothing but a choking hazard. In fact, I would never give those considering they aren't digestable and have been a common cause of intestinal blockages.
