My lab mix has recently developed a skin issue, and I'm unsure of what's causing it. Hoping to learn more about what could be causing this and how to prevent it.

Dime to quarter sized areas appear where there is dry/flaky skin. When scratched, the skin and hair in the area fall off and reveal a tender sore. Please see the picture below for detail.

I showed the vet on her last visit (1-2 months ago) who gave me a prescription shampoo, which hasn't seemed to improve the situation.

She does not have fleas and lives in a clean home. Spends time outdoors but not with many other dogs. Bathed once every week or two.

Any idea what this skin issue is or what could be causing it?

Hi there,

If it's changing in size, is warm to the touch or tender, I would take your pup back to the vet. In my experience, skin issues are tough to diagnose and it's best to have a professional take a look. The vet may take a skin scraping, or even drain it depending on what they think it is. Best of luck to you and I hope your pup is ok.
