Recently we were messing around with our lab when we noticed that if you made a sniffing sound near his ear, he will growl at you. He is never aggressive or violent in any way; this is the only way to make him growl. What do you guys think about this? Just a quirk or is something else going on? :ponder:

Well, to sniff his ear your face is getting really close to his face. He's probably uncomfortable.

When you're sniffing him does smell like anything are you concerned there may be something medically or are you doing it just because?

if you could imagine it from his perspective, what you are doing is very threatening to him and the growl is his way of letting you know that you are freaking him out/making him uncomfortable.

please stop doing this.

i would also look into ear issues, does he shake his head and/scratch his ears a lot?
