Okay, so this is Aerie, and she's currently 9 months old, 21" at the shoulder, and about 50 pounds or so. Quite literally, she is characteristic of just about every mal description I've read about, with three exceptions: her ears rarely are fully erect, she's super aloof around strangers.. borderline scared of them, and she's a tad shorter than what most mals look like. Last night I was reading about mal/ridgeback mixes and they look dead up like her, and most definitely act like her too, but I really can't be sure. Looking for direction! Here's some photos.. have at it! Thanks a ton.

That's what the humane society said, but what does that mean? part mal part GSD? one more than the other? Clearly she's a mix of something..

Looks like a Lab Shepherd mix, don't see any Ridgeback at all. Ridgebacks are considerably bigger and very short coated and completely different body shape.
Obviously a prick eared breed like a Shepherd crossed with a floppy eared breed like the Lab.

It's often hard to tell what they're mixed with if one thing is more obvious like the GSD in this case. I think it would be next to impossible to accurately determine what the other part is. Something floppy eared.

Woah... did some reading on the BMC.... that literally sounds just like her.. good call.. definitely could be it for sure. When I can, I plan to invest in one of those DNA tests.. any advice on them? Anyone?

For the dna tests, it's best to take the results with a grain of salt. But it's fun to read what 'could' be in the mix of your kiddo.

shepherd mix means...


German Shepherd, Dutch Shepherd, and the Belgian Shepherd (Malinois is one type of belgian) are closely related breeds. The features that differentiate these are diluted or just not present in many mixes.

So, for instance, it's nearly impossible to tell a German shepherd X Lab vs a Malinois x shepherd

So when you were told a 'shepherd mix' they are saying 'we are pretty sure it's half shepherd...but we can't tell if that's G, D, or B....and we can't get a good read on what the other half likely is.

Unless you are in an area with a pretty good population of these dogs, it's not likely to be part of your dog.

Similarly, your dog has a look similar to the Carolina Dog...but then it has been found out that a lot of times when you have multi-generation mixed breed dogs, they tend to medium size tanish color. Carolina Dogs are best identified by their unique behaviors (going into heat less often, den digging, etc)

Using appearance plus how common breeds are I'd guess your dog is 1/2 German Shepherd 1/4 pitbull type, and 1/4 lab...probably yellow.
