Hello, we have a 8 month of Miniature schnauzer that hasn't spent much time around other dogs. Lives with my wife & I and our 3 year old and 7 month old sun. A lovely, playful dog that is extremely gentle.

Because of a family emergency, we have to take the family to ur family overseas for 4 months. We have two options of friends who want to watch our dog for us. One is a family with 4 children and a young dog and cats. The other is friends with a 2 year old and no dogs. Both have watched our dog for a weekend before and he has done great at both places.

The question, is it best to have him stay for four months with a bigger family with another dog where he will receive non-stop interaction, simulation and socialisation, or is it better for him to stay with a family in a similar situation like ours where he will be with just another child and the family and be more subdued.

I am thinking the family with dogs might be good to get him better socialized as he gets very over-excited every time we go for walks with other dogs around each day. However, I am scared when we get back he would be depressed with the lack of stimuation our family offers. As a result I am leaning towards the younger family with one child where he will be well cared for/walked, etc and would not experience such a different life when we return.

Thoughts? Thank you so much if you have read this far.

You know your dog and the people best...but on the surface I would choose the people that have dog ownership experience for that amount of time. Watching a dog for a weekend is one thing...several months can be a whole new experience and set of expectations that they do not have experience dealing with.

I would not be as concerned about loosing your connection upon return. Dogs are always comfortable at "home" whatever situation that might be.

If your dog gets along with their dog, I think that would be best. It's always good to have a dog learn how to live with other dogs, because that's very different from just meeting/seeing other dogs.
