Hi. I am a newbie to this forum but not to companion pets or livestock.

Currently we have a rabbit, hamster, snake, fish, and several flight cages of birds. We have enjoyed the companionship of a wide variety of pets & my daughter is interested in wildlife/biology/natural sciences.

I grew up with dogs but our last dog passed away a few month ago. I have had experience with: an Irish Setter, Old English Mastiffs, an Afghan Hound, a Mini Poodle, and a mix breed mutt (pit bull + shepherd + doberman).

We are shopping for the RIGHT dog for our family. (We have a puppy on reserve at the pound at the moment... have 1 week to decide.) Ideally it is going to be a diabetic alert dog. onder:Not sure how to do this though.

It's good to do your research! There are a few people on here that are training their own service dogs and they might be able to point you in the right direction.

Don't let that pup sit too long. If it's not in foster care, the pup should get into a home as soon as it can to smooth its way into its new life. The shelter took weeks to decide on the applications on our last puppy, and we really had to work against that lack of socialisation.

If you are serious about your next dog becoming a service dog, I would hold off on any potential new dogs, and get in touch with a trainer ASAP. The important thing for you is finding a dog with the right kind of temperament for the work. The work/task itself is not going to be THAT hard to teach. But a dog that is too nervous, fearful, or independent/aloof might not be able to handle going to different places with you and reliably performing in all kinds of situations.

I'm sure if you can find a trainer, they will be more than happy to guide you and help you select a suitable dog.
