Insurance?

2452 Views 4 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  StanleyDog
My last dog passed away from cancer, and the last two months of his life cost us a little over $3500. We now have a new puppy that likes to put everything in his mouth right now. Due to our last experience and the new puppy's behavior my SO would really like to get insurance on him. I am looking at going through USAA for him, but curious what everybody else has used and liked, what your policy covers, and how much you pay per month or year. Thanks!

Tried PetPlan when first got Stella but it ultimately wasn't worth it, and I ended up paying pretty much the full amount of her vet bills with how much was being paid out for the plan. I can't vouch for other companies though, and I do hope to get another insurance when I can, but now it'll be a pain in the ass because she has a pre-existing condition.
I haven't gotten it yet but I'm looking at healthy paws pet insurance for my great dane Freyja. Cost varies by breed, age and area. Because she is a dane and I think my area mine will cost between $50-60/month with a $100 deductible and 80% covered. They cover illness and accidents. They also have higher and lower deductibles and more or less coverage, which changes the price.
We have VPI for Samantha, I believe the premium is somewhere between $600.00 and $700.00 per year. We virtually always at least get our premium back. Last year Samantha was really sick for months, and it paid about 80% or more of all costs. We got several years of premiums back last year. This year, fortunately, Samantha is much healthier, so we may not collect our premium, which is a good thing.
I got my Stanley last year, and at the vet, we were recommended a company called trupanion and I was told they don't force you into an annual contract and you can cancel anytime. However, after reading some reviews, I was little skeptical about signing up because I read some customer complaints talking about getting claims denied that should have been approved or getting premiums raised even though they were supposed to remain the same.
So the only source of advice that I had was internet and suggestions from other dog owners and some friends at my local meetup. There are a lot of inaccurate articles about pet insurance and it took me a while to find a few that were somewhat accurate and easy to read. These are the ones I found useful in case anyone is interested.
