Okay I'm gonna start from the beginning. I have a 3 month old puppy named Bindi. She's a very hyperactive dog, has a very ravenous appetite, loves to play with her toys. Wednesday she was completely fine except for not wanting to eat all of her food. I usually put her in her kennel around 10:30 a.m to take a nap & she gets up around 1 to eat lunch. She started to throw up white mucus around 11ish. Because she had thrown up I went to wash her bed. That's when i noticed there were tons of rice looking worms in her bed. Scheduled a vet visit for the next day (Thursday). She also hadn't ate anything or drank anything Wednesday. Took her to the vet Thursday. They weighed her and she weighed 22 pounds. They took a stool sample & tested her for guardia, which came back negative. They had to stuff a dewormer tablet down her throat. And gave us some flea medicine to put on her since she had a lot of fleas. She came home and seemed to perk up quite a bit. She ate some drank some water & ate some wet dog food. She started to be playful later that night & then i put her to bed around 10:30. Took her out to potty around 1:30a.m.. she peed and i put her back to bed. I awake around 5a.m this morning (Friday) to her throwing up in her kennel. I checked on her, whipped up the throw up & tried to go back to sleep. I take her out around 8 in which i noticed that she has thrown up more & it's also a yellow color vomit. Called the vet & they tell me to bring her in. Brought her in and the vet tells us that she's possibly has parvo. They give her a anti nausea shot & put some fluids under her skin which made a huge bulge on her sides. Took her home & gave her pedialyte to keep her hydrated since she still isn't drinking much. All she did today was sleep on the couch & was completely out of it. Tonight i was looking over her paper work from her vet visit & noticed that the dewormer med the vet gave her was Drontal Plus XL 136 mg. So i was wondering is that to much to give to a 20 pound puppy. Is what she's experiencing effects from the dewormer meds. Does she have parvo. She doesn't have any blood in her stool. It all come on so suddenly. I called the emergency vet tonight & they wanted her to come in but i won't have any money I just need some answers.

It sounds like it might be Parvo, and if that's a possibility...which it clearly is since the vet already told you they suspect parvo...she needs to be staying at the vet clinic. Parvo is very dangerous. Dogs need to be on fluid to stay hydrated so they have the strength to fight it off. Fluid under the skin helps, but a constant IV drip and other care and monitoring, is what she really needs if it's parvo. They can seem okay one minute, then 10 minutes later they're in critical condition. If it's Parvo she can easily die. It's not something to take chances on. I can't stress enough how important it is to get her in asap. She can go downhill VERY fast.

Puppies need to be fully vaccinated before they're ever exposed to other dogs, or areas that other dogs visit.

If she's still acting sick in any way whatsoever, then get her to a vet. Don't put it off.

It doesn't sound like parvo to me, it sounds like she had worms and got given a very high dose of medicine, which is probably why she's not feeling well.
Also, it's pretty common for dogs to throw up bile when they are hungry, for what it's worth.

Isn't there a test for parvo that the vet should have done anyway?

I strongly suggest taking her to another vet because the dose your puppy was given is the dose for LARGE dogs (which is what could have made her sick too). Keep us posted.

I would look into whether your puppy was given the meds for a large dog. I don't know this medication but a quick google showed it that Drontal Plus XL is for large dogs. If you can I would take the pup to another vet. I hope your pup will feel better soon.

The worms like rice you saw could be flea larvae. I am confused why they used a dewormer if they did not do a fecal exam or found none??

Is there anyway you could do a payment plan to see the emergency vet.

Do you have options of other vets in your area. I would find a new one.

Also, figure out how you are going to get rid of and prevent the fleas from coming back. There are options. My dog takes a chewable tablet monthly to prevent fleas and ticks.

I would call back the emergency vet and ask about payment plans and think of ways you can save. Your dog sounds very sick from your description.

Thanks for the advice guys. Unfortunately she didn't make it.. she passed yesterday around noon. We had brought her in to a different vet Saturday & they tested her for parvo & the test came back negative so they told us to continue pushing pedialyte in her. That night she hardly peed. I gave her her pedialyte around midnight & went so sleep. Woke up at 7 with her not moving and her breathing being shallow. She passed around noon. As sick as she was it seems like the parvo test would have came back positive. So i don't know if she died of something she ate or what. It's such a mystery. She was perfect fine & healthy & her usual hyperactive self last Tuesday & then 5 days later she's gone.

I know for sure the next time i get another puppy.. if there's a next time, i won't be any time soon. I need to properly grieve the lose of a 3 month old puppy. The next time I want to make sure she's old enough to be away for their mama. Bindi was only around 5 weeks when we got her. I will make sure they get their shots as soon as possible. Even if we only had her for 2 months she had a huge impact on our lives.
