/I have a 4 month old Bishon Frise and Shish Tzu mix and I cant get him to understand the whole potty outside concept.I feed him in his cage and take him outside immediatly after i let him out and if he dosent go poop i run him around outside and then put him back in crate and repeat 15/20 minutes later. I take him out and I can get him to pee, but he wont poop. I took him outside every 20 minutes since he ate breakfast for 4 hours the other day and he wouldent go poop outside but the second i decided to let him run free in the house he went and pooped on the floor immediatly. I have tried giving him treats when he goes outside but he still dosent want to go outside. And he only will go outside if im taking him out he will never let me know he has to go. Everyone keeps telling me to use potty pads in the house but I really hate them and im afraid if i teach him with thoes I will never get him to go outside completely. I have never potty trained a dog before so I dont know what im doing wrong. PLEASE HELP!

You are doing everything right! Some dog's just learn all at once(seemingly). It's like putting money in a soda machine, you can put 99 cents in with no result, but that one extra penny will do the trick. Just keep being patient, have a blowout celebration when he does the right thing, treats, praise, jumping up and down, like your favorite team just won the superbowl for the first time in a hundred years. One day he will just "get it".

I second sullyrules. As frustrated as you must be stick with it, it'll click for him eventually. I would also add that if he's not pooping outside take away his freedom until he does, in your example you said you took him out every 20 mins for 4 hours, didn't poop, then you gave him freedom. Don't give in, keep going on 20 min intervals until he poops then lots of praise and treats outside immediately after he's done, then he can have a bit of freedom inside to play, etc.

Does he normally poop shortly after eating? Some dogs do, my pup wasn't one of them - he would usually poo 3-4 hours after eating, maybe yours is similar?
