My dog is a powerful bull and deer hunter, I have a GPS collar so I can track him but is there any method to tell him to retreat back to me easily when he has stopped the animal he is hunting?

Have you look at Gun Dog Forum, most are all about R+ Training methods. Also R+ Field Training Group on Facebook might be able to provide some really good suggestions.

Until it became too much effort because of respitory issues I used a heading dog whistle on my dog. Different tones meant different things. I'm not sure that a hunting dog would give as much heed, but I like it much better than a clicker.
