We have three dogs, an older Pug, an older mutt that's mostly Beagle and then a 1yr. old Aussie/Border Collie mix. Currently, the Aussie has seemed to take over the pack since he recently became the biggest and is definitely the most rambunctious, but all three get along great most all the time.
Our Beagle mutt has always been fond of howling, but thankfully only when elicited by one of us and the Pug sometimes joins in, but is usually apathetic to it all. We just did this recently and for the first time around our Aussie puppy with not so good results. The second the Beagle started howling back to me, the Aussie came running across the room and lunged at him while barking and growling in a not so nice way. It wasn't so much of an attack as it seemed to be one dog checking the other back into place, but whenever you howl the Aussie seems to go nuts. If alone with the Aussie, he won't howl back, only come to you and sometimes jump up as if called. We assume howling has some sort of pack significance, but can't find any information that would offer answers to our problem or why it sends our Aussie into a fit.
